Eagle Dry House, Eleutherian Mills
Gunpowder
Typed caption: "This is the Eagle dry house and is diagonally across the road from the rear of the Eagle Packing House. It was used when labeing sporting powder packages, canisters, half and quarter kegs and kegs of Eagle duck powder. It was necessary to do this in a heated building during the winter months to prevent frost interfering with the paper labels before they had time to dry. The Eagle packing house was not heated in the early days. On the right, note corner of the lower coal house where charcoal was chared and observe in the shadow directly back on the left, the old acid works building, later used for storing and pulverizing nitrate of soda."

Rumford Dawes house
Dwellings
Written caption from original Macklem album: "Scene inside of No. 10 gate. Scene when entering Hagley Yard at the blacksmith shop gate. The road through this gate enters Hagley Yard at the machine shop and millwright's shop door and is practially the dividing point between Upper and Lower Hagley. The house in the center was part of the old Bark Mill or tanning mill property and is across the road and opposite the house used as a Hagley office in former years. This house was used for storage purposes and at one time a cooper worked in it as a shop, keeping in repair powder tubs used in connection with the manufacture of powder. J.W. Macklem, March 10, 1928."

Upright press, Hagley Yard
Gunpowder
Typed caption: "This was not a prismatic press. It is the remains of an upright press and judging from the surroundings I believe it is the upright press in the Brandywine Hundred section of the Eleutherian Works. The upright press used for making hexagonal and sphere hexagonal powder was destroyed in the big explosion, Tuesday afternoon, October 7, 1890. It was located in the Christiana Hundred side of the Eleutherian Works the Upper Yard and was not rebuilt on this location. However, we went across the creek and built a similar press for making this kind of powder and this picture suggests the successor to press destroyed on October 7 1890. John W. Macklem."

Migrant family during Great Depression
Poverty; Migrant agricultural laborers; Depressions;
Text on back: "'Okies' are always on the move – types that go to California to better their life of farm tenancy are all called Okies, whether they are from Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, or Colorado. Some are going, some are returning. Okies can be seen on the roads across the desert any time. There are said to be around 200,000 migrants in California. Forty-three percent of these are said to be Oklahomans from the dust bowl counties. That's why all migrants are called Okies. John Steinbeck's novel, Grapes of Wrath, turned the nation's attention to these migrants, and since the appearance of the book other writers have attempted to disprove Steinbeck's charges."
