Stereo photographs of Longwood Gardens

About this collection

Longwood Gardens is a series of formal display gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, that was developed by Pierre S. "P.S." du Pont (1870-1954) after he purchased the site from the Peirce family in 1906. The Peirce family had received this 1,000-acre site as part of a land grant by William Penn (1644-1718). Interested in horticulture, they ornamented the land with trees and plants that were not native to this area.
P.S. du Pont and his wife, Alice Beliln du Pont, built a series of formal gardens with fountains on the site. They opened the garden to the public in 1921. In 1937, P.S. created the Longwood Foundation. When P.S. du Pont died in 1954, the property was transferred to the Foundation to operate as a public garden.
The Stereo photographs of Longwood Gardens (Accession 1984.246) collection consists of 103 autochrome color glass stereo photographs. The images, dating to circa 1922, depict interiors and exteriors of the garden, conservatory, and residence. The collection has been largely digitized, but has not been digitized in its entirety.
