Located on Old Kennett Road outside Wilmington, the mansion was built in 1933 for Amy du Pont, a noted horsewoman, and designed to be similar to George Washington's Virginia home, 'Mount Vernon.' The architect was Mrs. Mary Craig and the builder was George McCauley and Son. In 1949, the home was given to nephew, Eugene du Pont III; Dauneport is no longer owned by the du Pont family.

The house located at 1302 King Street was built in 1798 by Benjamin Price, a miller. It belonged to the Comfort-Price-Zebley families. From 1872 on, the property was owned and occupied by the Springer-Ward-Spoers families.

On March 5, 1920, the Brandywine River overflowed its banks as a blizzard struck Wilmington. Forty city blocks were flooded. Considerable damage and flooding resulted to an area known as "The Orchards" where boathouses, docks and boats were anchored on the Brandywine River near the Eleventh St. Bridge . It is believed an associate of Frank Zebley, C.H. Brice, kept a boat here.
