Typed caption on back: 'SUBJECT: Sketch by Charles Alexandre LeSueur (1778-1846), French Naturalist and Artist, made in 1822 of the Piazza of 'Eleutherian Mills' and of the View from the Piazza. REMARKS: Identification of the Sketch was made from the following manuscript in his 'American Sketchbooks' 1816-1837: 'Be it know to all whom it may concern that the Ladies of the Brandywine have detained Mr. LeSueur by main force this day the second of September In the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and twenty two, In witness whereof they have hereunto affix their names. Eleutherian Mills - V. E. Bauduy, Eleuthera du Pont, S. E. Hare; Kentmere - Sara L. Gilpin, E. Gilpin; Louviers - Julia du Pont.' The figures represented could, therefore, be the children of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours or their guests. At that time Victorine Elizabeth (du Pont) Bauduy was 30 years old; Eleuthera du Pont was 15; Sophie Madeleine was 11; Henry was 10; and Alexis was 6. The Rocking-Horse had been a birthday gift to Henry from employees of the Powder Mills. This print was made from a microfilm of the original and was deposited by Prof. Gilbert Chinard of Princeton University in the Library of the American Philosophical Society. Professor Chinard had the microfilm made from the original sketch in the 'American Sketchbook' of Charles Alexandre LeSueur Volume I., Section 5, which is in the Original Museum of Natural History at Le Harve.'
