On March 5, 1920, the Brandywine River overflowed its banks as a blizzard struck Wilmington. Forty city blocks were flooded. Considerable damage and flooding resulted to an area known as "The Orchards" where boathouses, docks and boats were anchored on the Brandywine River near the Eleventh St. Bridge . It is believed an associate of Frank Zebley, C.H. Brice, kept a boat here.

Burned Wilson Line ship used as a pleasure tour boat. Joseph Wilson and son, Horace, formed the Wilmington Steamboat Company in 1882. In 1888, it became the Wilson Line and owned three steamboat ships. It developed excursion trips from Philadelphia, Chester, Wilmington and became owners of the New Castle-Pennsville and Wilmington-Penns Grove ferries.

This was the headquarters of the Colonial Dames, a historical society located at South Drive at West Street in Brandywine Park. The building, originally the First Presbyterian Meetinghouse located at Tenth and Market Streets, Wilmington, was moved in 1916 to make way for the Wilmington Institute Free Library.
