This was the headquarters of the Colonial Dames, a historical society located at South Drive at West Street in Brandywine Park. The building, originally the First Presbyterian Meetinghouse located at Tenth and Market Streets, Wilmington, was moved in 1916 to make way for the Wilmington Institute Free Library.

The school was built in 1819 by the Quaker Friends and was known as the 'Eight Square Schoolhouse.' Desks were located around the walls, with benches for the younger children in the middle. A desk for the teacher and a large stove were in the center.

A Pavilion near the entrance to the Brandywine Zoo in Brandywine Park known as the 'Sugar Bowl' was built in 1902 to provide a bandstand stage for outdoor concerts. It was demolished in 1954.
