Chandler, Theophilus P. (Theophilus Parsons), 1845-1928 (artist)
Faint outline sketch of building with plants, garden arch, trees. Written caption on verso: "This sketch has by tradition been identified as the 19th century greenhouse at Eleutherian Mills. A pencil notation on the back of the sketch identifies it as the garden greenhouse at 'Nemours, Delaware.' According to Dr. John Riggs, Manuscript Dept., when Gen. Henry and Louisa du Pont lived at Eleutherian Mills, it was at times referred to as Nemours."
Pierre S. du Pont purchased Pierce's Park (acreage and home) in 1906 and developed the existing property into the future gardens, exhibition buildings known as world reknowned Longwood Gardens. Photo shows the main Conservatory building.
