Caption from DuPont: "The first DuPont chemical laboratory was housed in this old saltpeter refinery building on the banks of the Brandywine near Wilmington, Delaware. Prior to the time this photograph was made, fire had destroyed a portion of the original building, which was erected about 1802, but the stonework of the building in the foreground is part of the original structure. In the laboratory which occupied the extreme left corner of this building, research directed to improved methods of refining saltpeter were carried out, probably by Eleuthere Irenee du Pont himself."
