Flipping your lid over National Hat Day? Why not go check out the Hagley’s digitized collection of John B. Stetson Company photographs? While most of us associate the Stetson hat with the Plains states and the pioneering American West, the company was actually founded in 1865 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At its peak, the company employed over 5,000 people and consisted of nine acres and twenty-five buildings around the intersections of 5th Street and Germantown and Montgomery Avenues. The photograph above shows women working in the company’s soft hat finishing room in 1925. Other items in the John B. Stetson Company photographs (Acc. 2001.214) collection document workers, workspaces, and worker’s amenities, as well as the company’s history and personnel policies.
