Eleuthère Irénée du Pont papers (Longwood)

About this collection

The papers of Éleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours (1771–1834) are part of the Longwood Manuscripts collection (Accession LMSS) of family papers assembled by Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) for his Longwood Library collection. Éleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours was a French American chemist and industrialist who founded the gunpowder manufacturer, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company.
Now held at Hagley Library, the Longwood Manuscripts collection is divided into ten collection groups. The Eleuthère Irénée du Pont papers (Accession LMSS.III) collection is the third of those groups, and consists of E.I. du Pont's personal and business correspondence; writings and notes; school materials; memoranda on manufactures and tariffs; legal agreements; patents; and land surveys. Also included are papers concerning the South Brandywine Rangers, a militia unit during the War of 1812. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.
