Van Stan, the son of the compound's inventor, Frederick Van Stan. Frederick Van Stan sold the rights to the name and product to Philadelphia resident John A. Keenan in 1876.

In 1902, Keenan sued the younger Van Stan and, in 1904, a court prohibited Victor F. Van Stan from using his name in the manufacture of competing products.
