In 1880, the first charge of nitroglycerine was produced at the Repauno dynamite pant in a building similar in architecture and construction to the one above-as waste acid building. Show moreIn 1880, the first charge of nitroglycerine was produced at the Repauno dynamite pant in a building similar in architecture and construction to the one above-as waste acid building. This structure was still in operation until 1954 when the company shifted production to a new plant (in Martinsburg, West Virginia) with a new, more efficient process. At that time the facilities of DuPont's first and largest dynamite plant were razed. In 74 years of operation, the plant has manufactured 2.5 billion pounds of dynamite. Today at Repauno, modern chemical towers (right) have replaced the explosives operations, producing DMT, essential intermediate for the manufacture of Dacron polyester fiber, Mylar polyester film and Cronar polyester photographic film base. While changes at Repauno are more dramatic and startling than at most DuPont locations, they are representative of steps DuPont must take to keep products and processes competitive. Show less
