Drayton gives his first report on his attack on Fort McAllister. The Passaic came under heavy enemy fire and received some very severe blows. Drayton believes that the damage inflicted on the fort during the day can be repaired at night and does not think the advantage to be gained by another attack would compensate for the risk of further injury to the Passaic. He awaits du Pont's orders on how to proceed.

Drayton has been appointed captain of the iron-clad Passaic. Although he does not think much of the vessel, he did not think he could refuse to command a ship that will certainly be expected to participate in any attack on Charleston.
