Du Pont orders Drayton to the fort at Genesis Point (Fort McAllister) on the Ogeechee River, where du Pont has decided to test the ironclads. Commander Daniel Ammen of the Patapsco and Commander John Downes of the Nahant are bringing their vessels and are ordered to report to Drayton. Du Pont anticipates the encounter may also lead to the capture or destruction of the Nashville. The Marblehead is to remain anchored in Wassaw Sound to cover the blockade.
