Services were held first in homes in the village, later at the Brandywine Academy, and in 1855, Alexis I. du Pont was instrumental in organizing a parish. The first building was begun in 1856. du Pont was killed in 1857 in an explosion at the powder mills. On his deathbed, he asked his wife to finish the church, which she did. The church has been closely associated with the du Pont family.

The log church was believed to be built in 1667 by Swedish and Dutch settlers and used until 1699 when Old Swedes (Holy Trinity) was opened. A marker made of native granite was erected by the Historical Society of Delaware in 1896 and reads 'THIS STONE MARKS THE SITE OF CRANE HOOK CHURCH BUILT 1667.'

The Welsh Tract Baptist Meeting is at the foot of Iron Hill near Cooch's Bridge in Pencader Hundred. The Welsh people settled on 3000 acres granted by William Penn. The original log church built in 1706 was replaced by the present Flemish bond brick, one story church in 1746. The sermon was in Welsh until 1800. Their group became the foundation of most Baptist congregations in the state.

Phillip Barratt, land owner and sheriff, deeded an acre of land to Methodists surrounding a brick meeting house being built in that area in 1780. It was considered a 'sacred landmark of Methodism' in 1880 and a 'Mecca of Methodism' in 1896. It was nominated to the National Register of Historical Places in 1972.

The old Presbyterian Church originally built on east side of Market Street below Tenth Street in 1740 was rebuilt this side in park in 1922. Site used by colonial Danes of Delaware. At this time Wilmington Public Library erected on original site.

Old St. Anne's, built in 1768, replaced an earlier wooden church and was established by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts for the Church of England. During the American Revolution, services ceased because the Reverend Philip Reading included prayers for the king. In 1952, the restoration process began, and it's been completely restored.

In 1788, a log church and cemetery was laid out on a half acre of land donated by Ebenezer and Andrew Morton. In 1839 a separate charge was established and in 1849, Mary McCullough donated 4 acres. There is no mention after 1871 in the Delaware Association of Churches� minutes. Church foundation stones and grave markers can be found. The oldest legible stone marks the grave of Francis...

Road from Annapolis, Maryland to Solomon's Island. St. James (Anglican denomination, 1694, called Herring Creek Church by locals). In churchyard are tombstones of Christopher Birkhead and wife dated 1666 - oldest in Maryland.
