Drayton reports that the Passaic and Marblehead went up the Wilmington River to within the sight of Wassaw or Thunderbolt. The Passaic was stopped by shallow water, and Drayton reports on the extensive Confederated batteries in the area. He did not find the Fingal.

Drayton writes that he will not be sorry to leave the ironclads as he goes to his next appointment in New York, and hopes that once he is in New York he will either be able to help improve them or kill them despite their backing by those in authority. Drayton mentions he is sending du Pont a copy of the letter that he prepared along with the other officers to send to Secretary Welles concerning their version of events of the failed attack at Charleston.
