Drayton sends various newspaper articles to du Pont concerning recent developments near Charleston, pertaining to the attack on Fort Wagner at James Island. Drayton discusses his conversation with Fox, who recently visited the navy yard at New York, and concludes that much more liberality is being shown to Dahlgren's ordnance requests than had been the case with du Pont. Drayton further discusses Rodgers, the Stimers' court case, changing public opinion towards du Pont, and his work in New York.

Drayton gives an update from Fernandina, mentioning that he is sending a report on the subject of liquor dealing on their vessels. He remarks that he went up in the Darlington as far as Nassau searching for a gun said to have been buried at the fort after the Union's occupation of it, and, after finding it, had it brought back to Fernandina. He also reports that he is trying to contain a mild outbreak of fever on board and has set up a hospital on shore.
