In December 1857, the Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company (later reorganized as the Seneca Oil Company) sent Edwin L. Drake to Titusville, Pennsylvania, where oil deposits were known to exist, but could not be viably extracted. After failed attempts, Drake and salt well driller William A. Smith successfully drilled a commercially viable oil well in 1859. The Drake Well was the first commercial oil well in the United States, and sparked the nation's first oil boom.
