Hailed as a styling masterpiece virtually from the moment it was introduced on October 2, 1939 the Lincoln Continental was distinctive offshoot of the Lincoln Zephyr series, developed under the leadership of Edsel Ford. It was in effect eh Mark I, although it never actually bore that designation. The present day continental Mark V traces its heritage to the Lincoln Continental.

More than a dozen motors were used to raise, fold, retract and conceal the roof of this unusual 1957 model retractable hardtop convertible. Only 48,394 units were built during the series three year life cycle. The car is now a favorite of special interest car collectors.

This is the first Ford car with Henry Ford at the tiller. The photograph was made last May in Greenfield Village, Dearborn where the first Ford is preserved in the original workshop where it was constructed in 1896.

To introduce the 1949 Lincoln, Mercury and Ford cars to the public, the News Bureau prepared and distributed press packets which were sent to all daily and weekly newspapers, magazines and radio stations. Pictures were obtained by sending photographers, models and hand built automobiles to Florida in January. The photographs were made in secrecy on estates and an abandoned airport near Orlando.

Introduced in 1935, the Lincoln Zephyr was a product of the new styling department organized by Edsel Ford. Its sleek design, highlighted by a wedge shaped grille, headlights that blended into the fenders and virtual elimination of running boards, quickly made it successful among luxury car buyers. in 1978, Lincoln-Mercury Division brought back the Zephyr name for its new company car line.

Framed in a giant metal lathe at Ford Motor Companys Rouge plant, Alex Tiebs, a skilled tool and die maker, carefully scrapes bronze insert ends of the lathes jaws so that the large but delicate part to be worked will not be marred. The huge machine is used to turn forgings for parts of giant machinery used in automobile manufacture.

Ford Motor Company factory sponsored cars dominated the super speedways of stock car racing in the mid to late 1960's. The Golden Boy of the stock car circuit was Fred Lorenzen, shown here piloting his 1966 Ford Fairlane to another major victory. Other drivers who put Ford products into victory lane during this era were Cale Yarborough, Junior Johnson, Bobby and Donnie Allison, Marvin Panch, Fireball Roberts, LeRoy Yarbrough and David Pearson.
