The stage play presented was "The Queen's Messenger" by J. Hartley Manners. Those with suitable receivers were able to see as well as hear the players, two in number, as the play was developed. The television system was developed by Dr. E.F.W. Alexanderson, consulting engineer of the General Electric Company.

One facet of this is computer graphics, a technology that frees the design engineer from the drawing board and the rigid constraints of making precise designs on paper. Instead, he can use the computer terminal to create much more complex designs, such as this three dimensional teapot, in a fraction of the time and at far lower cost than before, These designs can be instantly altered and rotated to expose a different view at the push of a button. At the GE Research and Development Center in Schenectady, N.Y. a major effort is under way to extend the capabilities of this powerful new design technology.

In their experiments, involving super tough titanium alloys, the GE researchers are making use of a 400 watt neodymium YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) laser that can be fired at the work piece at varying rates, ranging up to 300 pulses per second. the intense heat of the laser pulses-instantaneous temperatures of up to 3,300 degrees Celsius-causes the alloy on the surface of the work piece to soften and partially vaporize, producing the fireworks visible in this photograph. The resulting treated alloy can then removed at high speeds with conventional cutting tools.
