Barracks pictured here sheltered construction employees of first atomic energy materials plant at Hanford, WA which DuPont designed, built and operated at the government's request. Because existing towns within a reasonable daily driving distance were unable to provide housing, business and recreational facilities, DuPont later built virtually from the ground up the village of Richland to house the plant operation force. For the most part they were men and women from the company's industrial plants who had been moved to the area under utmost secrecy.

Show moreThe field assemblies are shown under twenty feet of water and behind empty fuel hangers. For the high flux operation, the Atomic Energy Commission has converted a reactor from military to peaceful applications. The objectives of this operation are to product trans-uranium isotopes and to irradiate materials for cooperating national laboratories. The neutron flux, heat flux and coolant velocity of the high flux charge are believed to be higher than those of any other reactor. High flux operation is possible in Savannah River reactors because of the excellent neutron economy of the heavy water moderator and the entrance of heat removal capabilities. (The only light for this photograph was the Cerenkov radiation).

- Description
-
Building in the background (left) is a Separations Facility at the Savannah River Plant. Chemical processing of uranium slugs takes place in this facility after the uranium has been brought from the plant reactors. In the foreground are huge concrete encased steel tanks which provide containment for radioactive by products (radioactive wastes). Only the vents can be seen since the tanks have been backfilled and covered with dirt.

- Heavy water facility at Savannah River plant
- Date(s)
- 1955, 1955~
- Contributor(s)
- E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (originator)
- Description
-
This facility at the Savannah River Plant produces heavy water for use in the Savannah River reactors. The heavy water produced here also is shipped to domestic and foreign users by the Atomic Energy Commission on sale or lease basis. The plant actually separates heavy water from the raw water of the Savannah River. Wherever there is water or moisture, heavy water occurs in normal water at the rate of one ounce to every 52 gallons.

Two world safety records for construction were set and 6,000,000 man hours were worked without lost time injury. 75,000,000 vehicles miles were logged per year on the project, 8,500 vehicles per day. National average traffic death rate seven 100,000,000 vehicle miles on the project, 2.7.
