Already the factories that manufacture baseballs are busily turning out a supply to meet the demand. These photographs, made at the A.G. Spalding Bros. factory which can make 12, 000 baseballs a day, show the construction of the balls used by the American and National Leagues. The cushion center, a piece of cork and two outer casings of pure rubber, are made first. It is then wound with four ply woolen yarn to a certain weight. Then it s wound with fine cotton yarn, weighed, inspected and passed on to the stitchers, who sews on by hand the horsehide cover. The ball is given a rigid inspection, stamped and packed for shipment. When complete, these official baseballs measure 9 inches in circumference and weigh 5 ounces. The league ball in its different stages of manufacture are shown in this picture. The three balls at the left show the preliminary stage, the next shows the ball with the wool yarn wrapping. Next comes the ball after 3 ply wool winding, then after a fine cotton winding. IN the foreground is the horsehide cover. The girl holds the completed ball.
