Citizens are preparing for any eventuality. If you could have seen the citizen soldiers drill on Governors Island with their wooden rifles you would be convinced that the men are getting ready. Most of them are pretty near prepared now. Some of them are training for commissions. New Yorks skyline can be seen in background.

Show moreI was sent to attend the first drill of the Womens Independent Rifle Club, of Cincinnati, the members of which are training themselves to guard our homes against the enemy if we go away to war. Go said the editor and find out what sort of a solider a mother makes. I regret to report if mother is going to be a soldier, this nation would not go to war in the springtime. In the springtime mother is too busy with her housecleaning and hasnt much time for soldiering. For instance, only seven members of the Womans Independent Rifle Club reported for drill, a mere Corporals Guard. Why are there so few of you? I asked. Well, replied the Captina, some are away doing their house cleaning and others are cut doing their spring shopping. Not enough of them being present, therefore, for drilling, the women practiced at shooting with their rifles at the target range. I have in my possession one of their targets. It is full of holes. Every one of the holes is in or very close to the bulls eye, which shows what our women could do to an enemy. Over twenty members have enrolled in this rifle club and it is only two weeks old. They have been measured for nest, olive green uniforms. Every one of the members is a good shot.
