Among the latest devices drawn up beside a special Pacemaker freight train are self-propelled load-carrying trucks, fork lifts, a portable crane, tractors and other equipment. Other large freight transfer points, including Buffalo, Cleveland and Indianapolis, are participating in the extensive mechanization program. The new devices of about a dozen types are supplementing and replacing hand and tractor drawn trailers. They are facilitating the handling of materials, transferring much of the heavy work from human muscles to machines.

A 15 cu. yard dipper used on one of the big dipper dredges at Panama. A platform has been suspended half way down this dipper and thirty-four men have been grouped on this platform. This gives you an idea of the immense size of these dippers. We may say that at the present time, the official rate of operation is one dip of a dipper such as this, every 40 seconds. The dredges operate night and day. [Construction of Panama Canal]
