- Contributor(s)

A graphic demonstration of the high temperature strength of TD nickel, DuPont's new alloy of 98% nickel and 2% thorium. The TD nickel bar reaches red heat, but does not fail at 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit under a load of 6,000 pounds per square inch. The best super alloys now used in high temperature service failed under similar test conditions at DuPont's Metal Center in Baltimore.

Billets can be heated to 2500 degrees Fahrenheit and contamination is minimized by the in process heating and rapid forging features of the press. The big forge press, which is operated from the console on the left, has a 40 inch maximum stroke and a power stroke speed of 150 inches per minute. The operations at the center where production of columbium metal and columbium alloys was just announced, are supported by the company's continuous research program which seeks new fundamental information on refractory metals. These new metals can stand the tremendous heat that is required of space age hardware.
