- Date(s)
- 1960/1969, 1960, 1969
- Contributor(s)

A graphic demonstration of the high temperature strength of TD nickel, DuPont's new alloy of 98% nickel and 2% thorium. The TD nickel bar reaches red heat, but does not fail at 2,100 degrees Fahrenheit under a load of 6,000 pounds per square inch. The best super alloys now used in high temperature service failed under similar test conditions at DuPont's Metal Center in Baltimore.

The technique for improving the strength of nickel involves the dispersion of particles of thorium oxide, one millionth of an inch in diameter, uniformly within the grain structure of the material, The dispersion techniques can be applied to other metals and alloys. The process is described by DuPont as a major breakthrough in high temperature metallurgy.
