The first commercial production of titanium metal resulted, in large part, from DuPont research. The metal has excellent corrosion resistance and strength-weight ratio. The world's first small scale commercial production of the ductile titanium metal was stated in 1948 at the company's Newport, Delaware plant. Titanium alloy wire weighs about half as much as stainless steel, but supports almost twice as much.

- Searching for oxygen in titanium metal
- Date(s)
- 1955
- Contributor(s)
- E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (originator)
- Description
-
Three parts per million of hydrogen and 10 parts per million of oxygen can be detected in titanium metal by apparatus operated by this technician at the DuPont Company's Newport, Delaware plant. Oxygen makes the metal hard and brittle, thus amount must be carefully controlled.

- Description
-
This is one pound of pure silicon crystal as manufactured by the DuPont Company's Pigments Department at Newport, Delaware. The hand gives some comparison for size. When melted down-the next step in the manufacture-this will make almost a cupful of what is known as 'dense' silicon.

First stage of the metal is in the form of sponge (second left) and next to it is an ingot of titanium. To the right are small fabricated pieces, used for test purposes. DuPont developed the first commercial production of the ductile metal in 1948. It became possible as a result of broadening of research into the field of titanium chemistry by the company, coupled with research and development by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the Kroll process. DuPont has been manufacturing titanium pigments for many years at its Newport, Delaware plant. The company sells the metal in sponge and ingot forms, but is not in the fabrication field.
