- Description
-
This view shows a shot of approximately 16,000 pounds of DuPont 60% gelatin dynamite in the Susquehanna River near Marietta, Pennsylvania. It was one of several blasts made to create a trench in the river bed for the laying of Big Inch, the world's largest oil pipe line. This was the largest single dynamite charge employed, up to that time to build a trench for a pipeline river crossing. A ditch 442 feet long was blasted.

Show moreThis scene shows part of the loading of large cartridges of DuPont 60% gelatin dynamite in the Susquehanna River near Marietta, Pennsylvania. The cartridges were five inches in diameter, 24 inches long and weighed 25 pounds each. The illustration shows a dynamite cartridge being loaded through one of the steel tubes causing the drill holes. In all, approximately 16,000 pounds of dynamite were placed in drill holes in the bottom of the river for this one shot which was to blast a trench to lay Big Inch, the worlds largest pipe line, which is being rushed from the Midwest to its Eastern terminus for the purpose of bringing oil to the Eastern seaboard states. Williams Brothers Corporation of Tulsa, Oklahoma is the contractor. This was the largest single dynamite charge in history employed to build a trench for pipe line river crossing. A ditch 442 feet long was blasted. The loading and detonation of this and other charges were under the supervision of dynamite experts of E.I. du Pont Nemours & Company. The blasting of ditches for pipe lines in the bottom of rivers where equipment cannot work was developed by DuPont explosives technicians. With the help of boats, barges, drills and other paraphernalia, holes are drilled in the right of way across the steam, Gelatin dynamite, which works efficiently under water, is used for the blast. Which every detail of the primary work is completed, the shots are connected to loading wires, equipment moved out of danger and the blast fired. Section by section the river is thus crossed in a fraction of the time possible by any other method known to man.
