Show moreFilm celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. From the film's opening credits, written by Jabob S. Potosfky, General President, Frank Rosenblum, General Secretary-Treasurer, and Hyman Blumberg, Exectutive Vice President : "In December, 1914, a small group of workers met in Webster Hall, in New York City, and founded a new union, the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. Fifty years later, the Amalgamated has 350,000 members working in the men's and boys apparel, children's wear and related industries, and in laundries, cleaning and dyeing plans and retail stores. The Union operates in 42 states, four Canadian Provinces, and Puerto Rico. This picture is not, however, a history of the Amalgamated, for the Amalgamated could only exist as part of the labor movement in a nation such as ours. Instead, this picture tells the story of America and its working people - for this, finally, is the Amalgamated." Directed and produced by Harold Mayer. Written by Millard Lampell. Narrated by Robert Ryan. Edited by Lawrence Silk. Original music composed by George Kleinsinger.

Finishing soft hats in the Finishing Department of the John B. Stetson Company, Philadelphia, is apparently a simple operation, but long experience is necessary to attain proficiency. Fine emery paper is used to smooth the felt, and the utmost care is taken to do the work evenly. This is the operation which makes the felt so smooth and pleasing to the touch. - Description

Sizing is systematic shrinking of the formed hat bodies to proper size. In the Sizing Department of the John B. Stetson Company, Philadelphia, the bodies are repeatedly dipped in hot water, which causes the fur fibers to shrink and knit closely. While shrinking they are carefully manipulated so that the fur is properly distributed, being reduced about two-thirds in size. [Caption on back of postcard]
