Drayton is sending the Darlington and placed his launch's howitzer aboard. Drayton asks du Pont to replace it if he is unable to send the gun back immediately. Drayton further reports that he is sending the Huron to St. Mary's, as he believes it to be an important outpost that enables them ' to keep up a communication with the interior through the slaves.'
