Description: Text on verso: 'Washington rubbed its eyes the other day to behold something new in the way of airplanes - an amphibious Vickers Vicking which Ross Smith, famous English pilot, used in his attempted flight around the world. It has twelve cylinders, a Napier motor developing 476 horsepower and will carry a crew of five. It will take off from the ground in nine seconds. Photo shows undercarriage of the plane showing the landing gear and hull of the ship.'

Description: Text on verso: 'The photo shows the disabled drifting plane Boston which came to grief on the hop from the Orkney Islands, Scotland, to Reykjavik, Iceland, just after the destroyer Billingsley, first to the rescue had thrown it a tow rope. Lieut. Wade is shown in the cockpit of the plane, while Lieut. Ogden is on one of the pontoons to make the rope fast, a risky trick in the choppy waters of the North Atlantic.'

The machine is the first flying boat to carry a gun capable of firing shells. The new gun can fire 100 rounds a minute of one-and-a-half-pounder shells. The plane is capable of 132 miles an hour, and can be tanked for a maximum range of 1500 sea miles. It has a wing span of 97 feet, a length of 70 feet high.
