Edward Burke, technical assistant in Arlington semi-works development, operates one of the Plastics Department's first cut-off machines for tapered nylon bristles. He started at Arlington in 1912 and has worked on development of products for the past 15 years. He worked with Dr. Ben Fields, who developed the tapered bristle.

Nylon plastics stripping for furniture, now being produced by DuPont in experimental quantities is strong, durable, easy to clean and is expected to be available in a variety of colors. Here laboratory technician Ruth Eck orients a 2 inch wide strip by stretching it on a laboratory testing machine. When produced commercially, the stripping will be stretched 3.8 times its original length. This lines up the molecules in an orderly arrangement and provides maximum tensile strength.
