This photograph demonstrates the exceedingly fine particle size of Ludox colloidal silica, a new product of the DuPont Company. This picture was taken with an electron microscope. The magnification is 25,000 diameters. This high magnification was necessary because the diameter of the average particle is about one two millionth of an inch. - Date(s)
- 1955
- Contributor(s)
- E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (originator), Rittase, William M., 1894-1968 (photographer)
- Description
-
Here is how a fabric processed with a water repellent will react toward globules of water. Not only is the design attractive in itself but it clearly shows the practicability of a water repellent treatment. Material processed with DuPont Aridex or Zelan durable repellent will give protection against rain and other non fatty liquids, without affecting in any way the nature of the fabrics to which they have been applied.

- Magnified crystalline aggregates of silicon
- Date(s)
- 1955
- Contributor(s)
- E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (originator)
- Description
-
Crystalline aggregates of silicon look somewhat like short rough jack straws. The DuPont Company manufactures silicon as a pure element in this form. In this photo, as indicated by the short ruler, the 'spikes' appear about twice their actual size.

- Microscopic view of neoprene latex
- Date(s)
- 1955
- Contributor(s)
- E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company (originator)
- Description
-
Particles of neoprene latex, made by DuPont, look like this when magnified 25,000 times. Prior to examination under the electron microscope, the specimen was show-cast with gold to give the three dimension effect. Shadow-casting is a relatively new technique by which scientists study the size, shape and distribution of minute particles and learn how these characteristics affect the properties of the substance.
