Although a small number of Benham's men reached the Confederate entrenchments, they were not supported and forced to retreat. The Naval vessels fired to cover the retreat, but Drayton states this was to no advantage given the vague and unintelligible directions that were telegraphed to him. Drayton believes that the incident proves the Union forces would not be able to penetrate much beyond the river without a much larger force and expects the encounter to embolden the Confederate forces on the island. Union losses are at least five hundred men.

Former Masters Mate Winton has secured passage on the Massachusetts as far as Port Royal and Maters Mate Rogers of the Massachusetts has taken his place in Drayton's division. Drayton has sent the Darlington to St. Johns carrying several refugees from Jacksonville and a Colonel Bryant, who was originally expected to take charge of Florida before the evacuation. Drayton believes the incident at Jacksonville has hurt the Union's standing in the area. Drayton also relates an encounter with a woman near St. Mary's, who accused them of kidnapping two of her slaves 'who were so attached to her that nothing else could account for their absence, when lo they turned up in the yard having come in the Darlington to look after some bedding, and much to the disgust of their mistress refused most positively to stay with her, although told if it was their wish they might do so.' Drayton remarks that there are here now about six hundred and fifty Contrabands.

Du Pont expresses regret that the incident at Charleston will irrevocably damage his ability to advance the officers who had served under his command. He believes that with the order to attack Charleston he had 'been called upon to make bricks without straw and dimmed my previous standing because I would not succeed.' However, he feels he has served the country and its cause by saving the fleet and coast, and in the process conducted an experiment with the ironclads that may prove useful in preparing for any foreign war. He thanks Drayton and his fellow officers for their letter concerning Charleston to the Secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles.
