This photograph shows the loading operations prior to initial startup of the HWCTR. The operation of a special tool for removing fuel housing tubes is being observed. Actual loading and unloading of fuel are accomplished by the refueling machine in the background. Radioactive fuel elements can be safely transported to a water filled storage pit within the lead shielded cylinder rising from the mechanical drive platform. The Heavy Water Components Test Reactor, an experimental pressurized heavy water reactor, designed and built by the DuPont Company for the Atomic Energy Commission at its Savannah River Plant near Aiken, South Carolina became operative March 3, 1962. The $9,750,000 research facility will be used to test nuclear fuel elements and reactor components as part of the AEC's nationwide program looking towards economic generation of electricity using nuclear fuels.
