At the time that American plows were introduced into rural Mexico they caused a disturbance. The Mexican farmers in Guadalajara refused to use the American plows for the following reason. When they had used the old Mexican plow they could run the plow, hold the guiding staff in their hand, and smoke a cigarette at the same time. You see, the Mexican plow has only one handle, so it did not take so many hands to guide it. When the new American plow was introduced they found that it had two handles. How were they to hold the two handles, carry their staffs and smoke a cigarette at the same time? They quit work. They would not be separated from their cigarettes. Before they would consider going back to work, they had to be shown that they could use the plows and smoke their cigarettes at the same time. It took a detachment of mounted police (the Ruralles) to give them their object lesson.'
