- Description
-
Bobbins of twisted yarn are checked on creel preparatory to winding on beam for weaving. Each individual strand, called an end, must be wound with meticulous care to insure steady feed in high speed weaving operation. Machine at DuPont's $5,000,000 Textile Research Laboratory at Chestnut Run near Wilmington, Delaware is part of production facilities supplementing research in seventeen physical and chemical laboratory units to diversify and improve uses of company's man-made textile fibers.

As an example, before nylon was put on the market, it was carefully tested by DuPont's Toxicologists to make sure it would not cause dermatitis. First, it was applied to laboratory animals in a variety of ways. Proved harmless to them, small pieces of nylon were taped to legs or arms of hundred of paid volunteers like those above. Patches were left on for one week, the removed for ten days and again applied. Final test of nylon's purity came with wear tests of hosiery by 5,000 women. Studies such as this which have been carried on by DuPont for many years are being continued at the Haskell Lab for Toxicology and Industrial Medicine.

- Description
-
Laboratory assistant at the Experimental Station of E.I. du Pont Nemours & Company selects a strand of rayon yarn to be subjected to test for strength and elasticity. Tensile strength or the force required to break a fiber or yarn and 'elongation', the distance it will stretch before breaking, are important factors in determining the utility of textile materials.

- Description
-
In addition to constant chemical checks on the process of manufacturing yarn at the viscose rayon plants of E.I. du Pont Nemours & Company, scrutiny is also given to such physical characteristics as the uniformity of denier, elongation, elasticity and breaking strength.
