This old oak tree near Wye Mills is considered to be the largest oak tree in the nation, growing since the 1500s. The state of Maryland purchased the tree and surrounding land in 1939, and in 1940, the oak was given the title Largest Oak Tree by the American Forestry Association. The Wye Oak is located along the Choptank Trail, which developed into a main road from Oxford, Maryland to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 2002, the tree collapsed in a severe thunderstorm.
