Show moreMore than a quarter mile of eight inch nylon hawser, the first to be put into commercial use, was delivered to ocean going tug Margot Moran, a 1,200 horse-power unit of Moran Towing and Transportation Company fleet. The hawser is the largest ever manufactured by Plymouth Cordage Company, Plymouth, Massachusetts and has breaking point strength of more than 105,000 pounds, comparing favorably with larger manila hawsers. It weighs over a ton, and contains enough nylon to make over 74,000 pairs of stockings. Special factory conditioning represented several months of use at sea. The hawser is re-reeled at the factory, after a special process conditioned the line to an equivalent of several months at sea.
