Digital Collections

This digital collection gathers materials from Hagley Library's collections by and about Alice Hamilton (1869-1970), a physician, research scientist, and social-welfare reform activist who specialized in the field of occupational health. Her work eventually made her a pioneer in the field of industrial toxicology. In 1897, she was hired as a professor at the Woman's Medical School of Northwestern University in Chicago. While there, she also took on a residency at Chicago's Hull House.. In 1919, she became the first woman appointed to the faculty of Harvard University, taking the role of assistant professor in a newly formed Department of Industrial Medicine. In 1910, Hamilton was appointed as a medical investigator to the Illinois Commission on Occupational Diseases. By 1916, she had become the nation's leading expert in occupational lead exposure, and was later hired as a special investigator for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In addition to her scientific work, Hamilton was a humanitarian and peace activist.

Amalgamated Leather Companies, Inc. manufactured black and colored glazed kid and other classes of leather used largely in making shoes in the early to mid-twentieth century. The company began doing business as the F.J. Blatz & Brother Co. in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where they made kid leather. In 1919, F.J. Blatz & Brother Co. took over the business of F. Blumenthal & Co., a Wilmington, Delaware business founded in 1890 that manufactured black and colored glazed kid and other classes of leather used largely in making shoes. The firm then reincorporated in Wilmington as the Amalgamated Leather Companies. Manufacturing ceased in 1966, and Amalgamated Leather Companies, Inc., was dissolved in 1967.

The trade journal The American Brewer was founded by Adolph Meckert in New York City in 1867 to serve the nation's growing beer brewing industry. As many of the country's brewers were German immigrants, the journal began publication in German, under the title Der Amerikanische Bierbrauer. Within a year of its founding, it was purchased by its writer and editor, the Bohemian immigrant Anton Schwarz, a trained brewer who would go on to establish the United States Brewers’ Academy in 1882. Schwarz, who died in 1895, passed ownership and editorial responsibilities of the journal to his sons, Robert and Frederick. Each journal issue contains scientific articles, production figures, industry news from around the world, and advertisements from brewery suppliers and manufacturers of brewery equipment.

The American Car & Foundry Company purchased the Jackson and Sharp Company of Wilmington, Delaware, in 1901. From the end of World War One to 1938, the plant built small pleasure boats. During World War Two, it built building landing barges, LCM tank lighters, aluminum pontoons, plywood smoke barges for the American forces, and YMS minesweepers for the British Navy. The plant was closed around 1945. The American Car and Foundry Company World War II era photographs (Accession 1993.257) collection document activities at the company's shipyard in Wilmington, Delaware, during World War Two. Images show ship launchings and shipbuilding, views of the plant, caricatures of employees, and other business activities.

The American Iron and Steel Institute is a trade association of North American steel producers. The group’s mission includes advocating for public policy, education and innovation for the iron and steel industry. The Institute was established under Elbert H. Gary (1846-1927) in 1908, after the Panic of 1907 brought an end to industry-wide consolidations. The restructuring of the industry after 1970 has somewhat diluted the Institute's impact, with separate organizations now representing minimills and other specialties. Still, the American Iron and Steel Institute remains the major industry trade association. The American Iron and Steel Institute photographs and audiovisual materials (Accession: 1986.268) collection consists of photographs, research notes, audio, film, and video which document the history of the steel industry. It has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Associated Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Companies comprised twenty-eight mutual insurance firms that specialized in industrial fire insurance. The association maintained a central testing laboratory for testing and accrediting fire control apparatus and electrical equipment, engineering and appraisal departments, and a Plan Division to produce and distribute fire insurance maps and plans of insured properties. The Associated Factory Mutual Fire Insurance Companies maps and plans (Accession 2087) collection consists of seventy plans and maps, mostly depicting textile mills, paper products factories, and foundries in New England and New York

Founded in 1918 by William H. Stayton, the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment was an early advocacy group for prohibition repeal in the United States. It became a leading and nationally prominent organization for the cause in the mid-1920s after attracting a number of prominent Americans to it membership, including Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954), Irénée du Pont (1876-1963), and John J. Raskob (1879-1950) The Association Against the Prohibition Amendment postcards and stationery (Accession 2005.204) collection collection comprises postcards and folded cards (stationery) issued by the organization. Each item is headed with the saying "Prohibition-Probes," which is followed by an anti-prohibition slogan or quotation.

Henry Belin du Pont (1898-1970) began Atlantic Aviation in 1927 to provide services for business aviation. In 1948, the company moved from the Du Pont Airport to New Castle County Airport south of Wilmington, Delaware and soon expanded to other airports around the country, continuing today as a major aircraft maintenance and sales provider. The Atlantic Aviation Corporation photographs (Accession 1999.223) collection includes portraits and views of Atlantic Aviation facilities at various airports. It also includes photographs of Charles Lindbergh's stop at Du Pont Airport in 1927.

The Austin Powder Company is a Cleveland, Ohio-based manufacturer of various industrial explosives and detonators, as well as a provider of blasting services around North America. It is the oldest manufacturing enterprise in the Cleveland area. The Austin Powder Company was founded in 1833 by five brothers. By the 1860s, the company had grown considerably, and was continuing to expand. The Austin Powder Company album (Accession 1973.231) documents the establishment of a new set of mills, constructed in 1892 in Cuyahoga County near Solon, Ohio.

The Automatic Merchandising Company operated and installed vending machines. A signature product was the Auto-Snak, a set of food vending machines which dispensed soda, coffee, milk, sandwiches, soup, salads, pastries and ice cream. The Automatic Merchandising Company album (Accession 2017.202) is a promotional salesman sample album from the company's Detroit Branch, and features automatic food vending machines for factories, universities, and offices. The album shows close-up views of Auto-Snak machines and the products they vended. There is also an article about the Budd plant installing the machines and a report about solving issues related to feeding employees. The contents have been removed from the album for preservation, but the original order of the album has been maintained.

Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn Inc. (BBDO) is an advertising agency network headquartered in New York City. The company began in 1891 as the George Batten Company and merged with Barton, Durstine & Osborn in 1928. In the decades since, BBDO has expanded to include locations in eighty-one countries providing advertising agency services as well as support services such as public relations, direct marketing, sales promotion, graphic arts, graphic design, and printing. The Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn, Inc. records (Accession 2752) collection includes advertisement tear sheets, films, ledgers, marketing reports, personnel files, photographs, press coverage, publications, research reports, slides, and speeches dating from 1892 to 2019. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Brandywine Valley stereo photographs (Accession 1970.134) collection consists of scenic stereo views from a published series entitled <em>Beauties of the Brandywine, Delaware</em>, produced by the Philadelphia photography studio of Bartlett & French around 1868. The images, many of which were taken on E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company property, feature posed individuals, mill buildings, and the natural landscape along Brandywine Creek.

This digital collection contains a series of interviews conducted in 2015 and 2016 on the business of craft brewing in the Mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. The collection includes interviews with brewers and brewery owners from Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. Additionally, interviews were conducted that cover packaging (canning), distribution, retail sales, and the politics around regulating the alcohol business. The Beer and craft brewing oral history interviews (Accession 2016.287) collection was developed by Gregory Hargreaves, Hagley's former Oral Historian. Hargreaves also conducted the interviews for the project.

The Berkshire Knitting Mills was once part of a triad of companies in Reading and Wyomissing, Pennsylvania owned by Henry Janssen (1866-1948) and Ferdinand Thun (1866-1949) known as Wyomissing Industries, which also included the Textile Machine Work and the Narrow Fabric Company. Built and incorporated between 1892 and 1906, these companies expanded rapidly between 1900 and 1930, becoming was the world’s largest manu­facturer of women’s hosiery. The Berkshire Knitting Mills photographic album (Accession 1992.249) is a bound album of documentation and captioned views depicting the Berkshire Knitting Mills factory, workers, and manufacturing processes in the years 1906 to 1923, a period in which the Mills were celebrated as the largest full-fashioned knitting mill in the world.

The Bethlehem Steel Corporation was a holding company formed in 1904 to control the older Bethlehem Steel Company and a number of shipyards nationwide. At the turn of the century, under the direction of Charles M. Schwab (1862-1939) and Eugene Grace (1876-1960), the corporation became the second largest American steel company. Combined with its other venture, Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corp., it became a leading twentieth century American business. This digital collection contains materials selected from two physical collections: Bethlehem Steel Company color transparencies and slides (Accession 1992.250) and the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Bethlehem Ship Corporation photographs (Accession 1980.300). These collections have not been digitized in their entirety.

In 1816, Éleuthère Irénée du Pont (1771-1834) financially supported the construction of the Brandywine Manufacturers Sunday School on his property. In 1817, the school began offering the children of local workers non-sectarian instruction in reading, writing, arithmetic, and religion. In 1823, the school became affiliated with the American Sunday School Union. The development of a public school system in 1829 resulted in gradual changes to the school; classes continued but were restricted to religious subjects. After the completion of Christ Church in 1856, the school became an Episcopal church school. The Brandywine Manufacturers Sunday School (BMSS) records (Accession 0389) are records primarily generated and maintained by the du Pont women; they include the school's constitution, financial records, student records, lesson notebooks, and correspondence. The Oral histories on work and daily life in the Brandywine Valley (Accession 1970.370) collection is made of a series of oral history interviews conducted by Hagley staff between 1954 and 1990. These interviews feature individuals who had worked at the DuPont Company powder yards on Brandywine Creek during the yards’ final decades of operation, or who had lived near the yards as spouses or children of DuPont Company workers. Some of the individuals who were interviewed donated, lent for copying, or provided information about photographs depicting the workers' communities and powder yards. These photographs now form the Brandywine Valley oral history interviewees' photographs (Accession 2017.255) collection.

Buckley Music System, Inc. was a manufacturer and distributor of jukebox music systems for businesses. The company operations were active from approximately 1939 through 1950. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, Buckley had several distributors in various regions around the United States. The jukebox stations were tied into a central system, including jukes, and a full line of auxiliary wall and or bar boxes, and speakers. The Buckley Music System, Inc. album (Accession 2016.301) is a salesman sample catalogue marketing the Buckley jukebox system for restaurants, bars, and clubs. The album consists of thirty-two photographs showing the interiors of establishments who installed the system, as well as photographs of company employees and an image of a wall-mounted speaker cabinet. The album was temporarily disbound for scanning, but the photographs have been kept in their original order.

The Budd Company was a manufacturer of steel automobiles, passenger rail cars, and other transportation products. The company began in 1912, in Philadelphia as the Edward G. Budd Manufacturing Company specializing in the manufacturing of all-steel body automobiles. The company became a major producer of automobile parts as well as a manufacturer of stainless steel passenger railroad cars and other products. This digital collection contains photographs from a number of collections that originated from the Budd company archive, and which document a broad range of the company's activities. The Budd Company photographs (Accession 1999.228) collection is a physical collection at Hagley Library that has not been digitized in its entirety. The Budd Company digital photographs (Accession 2020.213) collection is a digital-only collection that was provided to the library on a loan for copy basis, and has been included in its entirety.

In 1901, Congress founded the National Bureau of Standards, known since 1988 as the National Institute of Standards and Technology.It is a non-regulatory U.S. Department of Commerce agency intended "to establish an authoritative domestic measurement and standards laboratory." In 1928, the Bureau’s Fire Resistance Division burned down two condemned brick buildings in Washington D.C. to study the results. This action was likely the first full-scale fire test ever conducted. The data gathered during these fires was compared against theoretical time-temperature curves that were used at the time, and was eventually used to create uniform fire resistance standards for buildings. The Bureau of Standards fire test of steel furniture album (Accession 1993265) documents tests conducted by the bureau between 1926 and 1927 concerning the effect of fire on steel furniture. Captioned images show the aftermath of a fire test in an office with furniture supplied by the National Association of Steel Furniture Manufacturers.

This digital collection includes consists of issues of Business Screen magazine, a trade publication for the industrial film industry, that were published between 1938 and 1973. We would like to thank Rick Prelinger for his generosity in making this resource available. Hagley Library's Business Screen magazine (Accession 2017.227) collection is entirely digital. Original materials are housed with the Prelinger Archives, which also provided the digital copy.

Canada Dry is a brand of soft drinks best known for its ginger ale. Canada Dry had its beginning in Toronto, Canada when John McLaughlin (1865-1914) opened a small carbonated water plant in 1890. He created Canada Dry Pale Dry Ginger Ale in 1904. P.D. Saylor and Associates purchased the company from the McLaughlin family and formed Canada Dry Ginger Ale, Inc. in 1923. Much of its consumption during this time was due to its popularity as a mixer to mask the taste of home brew during Prohibition. The 1930s saw the introduction of other Canada Dry mixers and a period of worldwide expansion. The Canada Dry beverages sales album (Accession 1995.248) is a 1938 marketing flip chart for Canada Dry distributors' sales agents. It contains images of Canada Dry products, bottling plants, the manufacturing process, advertising campaigns, and point of purchase "sales boosters", as well as merchants' testimonials and statistical marketing information for retailers.

Cape Charles was established in 1884 as the southern terminus of the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk Railroad. The town quickly expanded as an increasing number of passenger and freight trains arrived daily to be carried across the Chesapeake on barges and steamships to Norfolk. In 1922, the railroad became a part of the Pennsylvania Railroad, and Cape Charles became headquarters for the Pennsylvania Railroads's Norfolk Division. The Cape Charles, Virginia, historic photographs (Accession 1972.250.2) collection consists of forty-three photographs taken between 1885 and 1886, showing the early development of Cape Charles. Views of the wharf and harbor areas and the steamship "Cape Charles" built by Harlan and Hollingsworth of Wilmington, Delaware, comprise nearly half the collection.

Carol Litchfield (1936-2012) was a biologist and biochemist specifically interested in halophilic microbiology (microorganisms that live in salt rich environments). Later in her life her interest in halophiles transformed into a fascination with the history of salt, which inspired her to collect a wide range of ephemera and documentation related to salt, from images of salt production and advertisements from salt companies, to salt shakers and actual pieces of salt rock. Litchfield's personal papers and her collection now form the Hagley Library's Carol Litchfield collection on the history of salt (Accession 2012.219), which includes ephemera, postcards, films, advertisements, photographs, documents and objects featuring salt products. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

<ol>As an organic chemist, Carter Litchfield (1932-2007) studied and specialized in edible fats. Over the course of his career, Litchfield built a substantial collection about the history of fats and fatty materials. This collection now form our Carter Litchfield collection on the history of fatty materials (Accession 2007.227), containing his collection of photographs and ephemera, and Carter Litchfield collection on the history of fatty materials (Accession 2413), containing works related to his research and publication activities. This digital collection is a curated selection of items from these collections, which have not been fully digitized, and primarily includes paper ephemera and trade catalogs. There are also items relating to the Prussian chemist, Julius Lewkowitsch (1857-1913), whose collection Litchfield acquired.

The Centennial International Exhibition of 1876 celebrated the one hundreth anniversary of American Independence. Held in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, it was the first major U.S. world's fair. Nearly ten million visitors visited the fairgrounds, which were made up of five main buildings, as well as some 250 pavilions and auxiliary structures, including twenty-four state buildings, each designed in a regional style. The Centennial Exhibition photographs and ephemera (Accession 2003.255) collection consists of photographs and ephemera pertaining to the Centennial International Exhibition. This collection has not been scanned in its entirety.

The Chamber of Commerce of the United States of America formed in 1912 with the purpose of advising the government on issues facing industry and business throughout the country. The majority of images in this digital collection are photographs taken for the Chamber’s publication, Nation’s Business.. Published from 1912 to 1999, the monthly magazine featured images by many of the country’s most prominent photographers, and proved invaluable as a public relations tool and a means of communicating the Chamber's agenda to members of the business and legislative communities. This digital collections features selected materials from the Chamber of Commerce of the United States photographs and audiovisual material (Accession 1993.230) collection and from additional publications that may be found by searching Hagley Library's catalog. Charles Blasius & Sons began in Philadelphia in 1855, and manufactured pianos under their own brand name, as well as "Ideal" and "Regent." In 1887, they bought the trade name "Albrecht", which was one of the oldest piano makers in the United States. In 1888, the company expanded its operations to include a factory in Woodbury, New Jersey. Around 1916, the company and its properties were purchased by the Rice-Wuest Company, which continued making pianos under the Blasius brands until that company's closure in 1919. The Photographs of the Charles Blasius & Sons piano factory in Woodbury, New Jersey (Accession 2006.206) collection consists of fourteen photographs showing interior and exterior views of the company's factory in Woodbury, New Jersey. The photographs were taken around 1895 by James L. Dillon, a commercial photographer in Philadelphia.

An aerial photographer hobbyist turned professional, Charles Findeisen (1919-2007) spent most of his life flying airplanes. He consulted for real estate development firms, engineering firms, and construction companies, and virtually all of his work was in the tri-state region of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Many of the images in the Charles Findeisen aerial photographs (Accession 2009.223) collection depict local airports; many other images have associated coordinates identifying the precise location where the photograph was taken. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

Cinécraft Productions was founded in 1939 by Ray Culley (1904-1983) and Betty (Buehner) Culley (1914-2016) in Cleveland, Ohio. The firm specialized in commercial productions for business, industry, trade organizations, and, in some cases, government agencies and social service organizations. The company has been in continuous operation since then, making it the “country's longest-standing corporate film & video production house”. Hagley Library's collections of material generated by, or in association with, Cinécraft Productions include The Cinecraft, Inc. films (Accession 2019.227) collection, the Culley family collection of Cinecraft Productions audiovisual materials (Accession 2018.201), Cinecraft oral histories (Accession 2021.206) collection, Robert A. Schneider collection of Cinecraft Production audiovisual materials (Accession 2018.202), the Frank Siedel papers (Accession 2022.215), and scattered items in our Sponsored and industrial motion picture film collection (Accession 2018.222). The collections that have been digitized appear below. None of them have been digitized in their entirety, and new additions continue to be made to some collections.

The City Planning Vertical File (Accession 2184) collection was formerly part of the library of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. The file contains pamphlets, reports, and prospectuses relating to all aspects of city and regional planning, with emphasis on transportation and other infrastructure, land use and zoning, urban renewal, housing, slum clearance, industry and commerce, central business districts and suburban shopping centers. The publications represent federal, state, regional and local government agencies, private engineering, architectural and planning consultants, quasi-public and non-profit associations, regional authorities, chambers of commerce, and university departments. The bulk of the materials date from the 1950s through the 1970s, the heyday of urban renewal and federally-​sponsored planning. There are also a few developers' brochures on built or projected building complexes and industrial parks. The majority of the publications deal with Philadelphia and the surrounding counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. However, significant coverage is available for other metropolitan areas, including Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Greater New York, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

This digital collection includes a small but significant selection of letters, photographs, pictorial envelopes, and other primary sources from the Hagley Library connected to the Civil War. Many of the items relate to du Pont family members, soldiers who served with them, or powdermen who worked in the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company powder yards during the war. Of particular interest is the correspondence of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont with one of his naval officers, Percival Drayton. The items were digitized in conjunction with Hagley's exhibit, An Oath of Allegiance to the Republic: the du Ponts and the Civil War

Conagra was founded as the Nebraska Consolidated Mills (NCM) in 1919 via the conglomeration of four grain milling companies headquartered in Grand Island, Nebraska. As American consumers began turning to prepackaged foods in the 1950s, the company pivoted its product line away from grains and flour to meat products. By 1971, its product lines had shifted enough to bring about a corporate renaming, adopting ConAgra Foods by using a portmanteau of "consolidated" and "agriculture". However, the company soon entered a period of decline, exacerbated by failed efforts to expand into the meat and meat by-products industries. Beginning with the purchase of Banquet Foods in 1980, the company once again shifted its product lines, gradually becoming a holding company that specializes in making and distributing consumer packaged foods under various brand names. This born-digital collection consists of annual reports issued by the company since 2005

The Conference Board was founded in 1916 by eleven major trade associations in the United States as the National Industrial Conference Board. It became The Conference Board in 1970. The Conference Board organizes conferences and events which center around three major topics: Corporate Leadership, Economy and Business Environment, and Human Capital. The conference speakers are leading business and subject experts and seek to discuss emerging trends, challenges, and solutions. Additionally, as part of its ongoing function as a lobbying group and publicist for American business, it produces research reports on economic and social issues facing the United States. The Conference Board audio recordings (Accession 1986.231) primarily contains audio recordings and accompanying materials on paper documenting conferences, meetings, workshops, and forums hosted or attended by the Conference Board. This collection has not been fully digitized; its finding aid is unpublished.

Incorporated in October 1974, the Consolidated Rail Corporation (Conrail) was formed under the auspices of the United States Railway Association, a quasi-public agency established for the purpose of solving the problems of bankrupt railroads in the Northeast and Midwest. The assets of six major bankrupt railroads were transferred to Conrail at condemnation value on April 1, 1976 The resulting Conrail system, covered about 20,000 route-miles. Most of this mileage, as well as its Philadelphia headquarters, were inherited from the Penn Central Transportation Company. The Conrail photographs (Accession 1993.231) collection consists of a large number of images from its company files, but the majority of the material comes from its predecessor companies. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

Incorporated in Delaware in 1935, the Consolidation Coal Company formed in Maryland in 1860. In 1945, the company merged with Pittsburgh Coal Company to form Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Company. The name returned to Consolidation Coal Company (Consol) in 1958. This digital collection comprises the annual reports of the company from 1940 to 1965 as well as a corporate history published in 1934. Each report has been catalogued individually in Hagley Library's published collections.

This digital collection includes more than 7,800 images from Hagley Library's Dallin Aerial Survey Company photographs (Accession 1970.200) collection. The company specialized in aerial images of factories, private estates, schools, country clubs, towns, airports, rivers, and many other sites and some news events of the day. The majority of the photographs concentrate on the Mid-Atlantic region covering a period from 1924 to 1939 although Dallin did make trips to other locales within the United States. This digital collection also includes material from the Colonel J. Victor Dallin films (Accession 2018.226)collection. David Harrison Cope (1913-2001) held a lifelong interest in railroads. From an early age, he began a collection consisting of photographs, negatives, and eventually 35 mm slides of mostly locomotives and trains from southeastern Pennsylvania. His own photography began in the 1930s. His collection also includes images from other railfans from about 1890 to the 1960s. The David H. Cope photographs (Accession 2001.242) collection primarily consists of black and white photographs and negatives of steam locomotives from a variety of railroads, but it includes some other images as well; mostly rolling stock, station photos, street railroads, and other related railroad items. Cope also photographed and collected 35 mm color slides of his subjects, dating predominantly from the 1970s. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety, and more items may be added to this digital collection at later dates.

The David Sarnoff Library collections (Accession 2464) include the research records, the papers of individual scientists, photographs, films and sound recordings that document the research and development conducted at the David Sarnoff Research Center and other RCA facilities from the early days of the Radio Corporation of America to the David Sarnoff Research Center’s operations in the 1980s and 1990s. It also includes the original David Sarnoff papers (Accession 2464.55) collection, assembled by Sarnoff and his staff to document his career. These formed the core of the David Sarnoff Library when it opened at the David Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton in 1967. When the library closed in 2009, the archival collections were donated to Hagley and the museum objects went to The College of New Jersey. This digital collection offers a small sample material selected from the David Sarnoff Library collections at Hagley, which encompasses twenty collections and nearly 3,000 linear feet of material.

Pierre S. du Pont incorporated the Delaware School Auxiliary Association in 1919 to finance the construction of new school buildings throughout the state. Between 1918 and 1940 du Pont donated $5,000,000 to build some 120 schools. The Delaware School Auxiliary Association photographs (Accession 1969.044) collection contains photographs, almost all exterior, of 114 public elementary and secondary schools in Delaware. These include old school buildings and the new ones that replaced them in the building program instituted by Pierre S. du Pont. The Delaware State Fair was first held in Wilmington, Delaware around the turn of the twentieth century. In 1917, the Delaware State Fair Association purchased land in nearby Elsmere, where new fairgrounds were built which included racetracks for horses and automobiles, exhibition buildings, and a large parking area. In 1928, the fair moved 60 miles south to Harrington, Delaware. The Delaware State Fair albums (Accession 1991.212) collection consists primarily of two albums of photographs of the Delaware State Fair from 1919, 1920, and 1921. Subjects primarily include livestock, agricultural displays, automobile displays, arts & crafts displays, displays of various youth organizations, vendor booths, horse and car races, dog shows, and views of the crowds. The albums have not been digitized in their entirety.

When the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western (DL&W) Railroad added direct ownership of coal mining facilities to its operation in 1851, its combination of mining and transportation industries under one corporate entity gave it a market advantage. The DL&W became one of the largest and most prosperous anthracite transporting and mining companies in Pennsylvania. However, following the successfully prosecuted antitrust suit of United States v. Delaware, Lackawanna & W. R. Co. in 1915, as well as a series of antitrust actions against competitors, the DL&W voluntarily divested itself of its mining operations, which were reorganized under the Glen Alden Coal Company in 1921. The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Co. Coal Department photographs (Accession 1990.267) collection consists of dated and undated views of mining equipment, mine tunnels, and mine building exteriors and interiors in the eastern Pennsylvania counties of Lackawanna and Luzerne. Most of the views are exteriors devoid of workers. Many of the photographs include a photo credit for W. B. Bunnell, the official photographer of the DL&W.

The Disposor Corporation was incorporated on July 17, 1933. It is a foreign business corporation with headquarters in New York, New York. The Disposor Corporation was the sales agent for the General Fan Corporation of New York City in the 1930s. Ernst Glantzberg (?-1936) was the President of General Fan Corporation which manufactured the Typhoon fan and other significant heating, ventilating and cooling units. The Disposor Corporation album (Accession 2013.258) consists of fourteen photographs of various mechanical units (ventilating and cooling) on display at exhibits or installed in businesses, including a ship and restaurants. These images were put together by Disposor Corporation into a sales album. The album also includes images of various styles of grilles that the General Fan Corporation offered and three charts of various product specifications and prices. The photographs have been unbound for preservation. Six photographs are missing from the album.

Edith N. McConnell (1880-1968) was a confectioner and caterer in Wilmington, Delaware from the 1920s through the 1950s. The E.N. McConnell Restaurant photographs (Accession 1969.026) collection consists of 13 photographs, mostly dating from circa 1945, of wedding cakes, table settings, and the interior of Edith McConnell's confectionery business. Some photographs show members of bridal parties, waiters, and restaurant staff, and a few of the individuals pictured are identified. Locations shown include the Newark Country Club, Scott Church, E.N. McConnell Restaurant, Blue Cross, and the home of Miss Amy du Pont.

The Edward J.S. Seal photographic reproductions (Accession 1971.336) collection features over 300 photographs taken by the Seal family of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania during the first half of the twentieth century. Edward James Shimer Seal (1896-1955) was a farmer and photographer. The son of Howard Ellsworth Seal (1859-1940) and Annie Lincoln Shimer Seal (1864-1920), he grew up on Locust Knoll Farm in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Later in his life, Seal owned Wilmington Camera Shop in Wilmington, Delaware. Many of these images offer a glimpse into family and town life in Chadds Ford and Wilmington, Delaware during the 1920s and 1930s, featuring Seal family members, friends, neighbors, and employees. Other subjects include the 1939 World's Fair in New York, the artists N.C. and Andrew Wyeth, and local bridges and roads.

Construction began on the Eleutherian Mills Historical Library (now Hagley Library) in 1959 on the site of the Hagley Museum along the Brandywine Creek north of Wilmington, Delaware. In the summer of 1961, the holdings of the library were moved from the Peirce-du Pont House at Longwood to the newly constructed library building. The dedication ceremony for the library was held October 7, 1961. The Eleutherian Mills Historical Library Dedication audiovisual material (Accession 2011.324) collection contains material related to the dedication; a copy of the dedication booklet, an audiorecording of the ceremony, and photographs of the dedication festivities as well as exterior and interior images of the building. Most attendees photographed are identified. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Hagley Museum began producing research reports in 1953 for the purpose of developing and elaborating its exhibits and interpretations. They were prepared by a permanent research staff and by participants in the Hagley Fellowship Program, administered jointly with the University of Delaware, many of whom went on to distinguished careers in the history of technology and business. <ol>The reports were produced from manuscript and secondary sources at the Hagley Museum and Library. They have the advantage of collecting and condensing information on selected topics relating to the industrial history of the Brandywine Valley and providing tracings back to the original sources. These reports are maintained in the Eleutherian Mills-Hagley Foundation research reports (Accession 1645) collection, which also includes scholarly articles that use Hagley's collections or about subjects that pertain to Hagley's mission. Elizabeth Webb (1663-1726) was a minister of the Society of Friends, wife of Richard Webb of Gloucestershire, England, and later of Birmingham Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania. In November 1697, Elizabeth Webb and her companion, Mary Rogers, left Bristol, England, in order to visit several important Quaker meetings in North America. They returned to England in May 1699. "A short account of my viage (sic!) into America with Mary Rogers my companion" (Accession 0096) is Webb's journal of that 1697 visit. It includes references to all places visited, especially meetings in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. The names of many Friends are included, and there is much about her religious feelings and inspiration, with some detail on the problems of travel, but little descriptive material on the colonies or the mode of life which then prevailed.

Enron Corp. was incorporated in Delaware on April 25, 1930 as the Northern Natural Gas Company. The rise and fall of Enron Corp., a natural gas utility transformed into the world’s largest energy trader, followed a pattern of boom and bust familiar in the history of American business. The papers in the Enron Corp. board records (Accession 2487) collection belonged to Herbert “Pug” Winokur, a member of Enron’s board of directors and chair of its finance committee and are one of the few extant collections of Enron board materials. Winokur used these records to prepare for depositions associated with the Enron bankruptcy. This collection contains meeting minutes, supporting materials and other documents relating to the Department of Justice investigation into the Enron Corp. from 1997 to 2002. It has not been digitized in its entirety.

Ernest Dichter (1907-1991) was a major pioneer in consumer motivational research. Early in his career, he worked for the advertising agency of J. Stirling Getchell, Inc. and for the CBS Network before starting his own consulting business in 1946. Dichter provided these services for a wide range of international clients and released a number of newsletter-style serial publications about his work and research. Dichter specialized in the "depth interview" approach, in which samples of target consumers were subjected to a battery of psychological tests and psychoanalytic analysis. This online collection is a small sample of items from two collections at Hagley Library; the Ernest Dichter papers (Accession 2407) collection and the Ernest Dichter photographs and sound recordings (Accession 2009.226) collection.

The Fairmount Park glass plate negatives (Accession 1971.597) collection consists of thirty-five glass negatives and one original box. The negatives themselves include no identifying information, but a sticker on the box indicates that the images are of Fairmount Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Many of the images include identifiable landmarks. The photographer is unknown. Most of the photographs appear to have been taken in Wissahickon Valley Park, historically part of the Fairmount Park system, prior to a 2010 merger of the city’s Fairmount Park Commission and the Department of Recreation. This park is located in Northwest Philadelphia, and includes Wissahickon Creek from its confluence with the Schuylkill River, and extends to the northwestern boundary of the city with eastern Montgomery County. While the photographs are undated, it is estimated that they were taken no earlier than 1908, based on the presence of what appears to be Walnut Lane Bridge, completed in October of that year, in one of the images.

The Ferracute Machine Company of Bridgeton, New Jersey, was formed in 1863 by inventor Oberlin Smith. Initially, Ferracute supplied machinery to the makers of tin cans, and by 1891 it offered a full line of machinery for setting up canneries. Ferracute later began manucacturing presses for minting coins, as well as other lighweight machine parts and consumer goods. The Ferracute Machine Company photographs (Accession 1987.244) collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection contains images of Oberlin Smith and Ferracute employees, the company's shops, as well as images of a trip made by an employee, Henry A. Janvier, who was sent to China as a consultant to the American Trading Company to supervise the installation of Ferracute coining machines in the Imperial Chinese mints in Hubei and Sichuan provinces in 1898.

Assembled by collectors Arlene and Gerald Fingerman, the Fingerman collection of ephemera (Accession 2009.213) consists of mixed-format ephemera from various endeavors within American culture, primarily the manufacturing and selling of products or services. Advertising cards and labels compose a large portion of the collection, but it also includes billheads, blotters, bookmarks, business cards, catalogs, checks, envelopes, flyers, letterheads, newsletters, packaging, postcards, and stamps. The collection is organized by the following subjects: agriculture, beverage, cloth/clothing, cosmetic, financial, food, household, medical, religion, sewing, soap, tobacco, transportation, utility product, war, and miscellaneous. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Fitz Water Wheel Company specialized in the manufacture of water wheels and small power plants. John Fitz (1847-1914), who succeeded his father as head of the firm, developed the modern steel overshot water wheel. Fitz aimed its product at farmers, small millers, and small town hydroelectric and pumping stations in the United States and abroad. The spread of rural electrification cut into Fitz's market, but John Samuel Fitz, who had succeeded his father in 1914, kept the firm in business by shifting to production for "show" rather than productive use. The firm made many model wheels and turbines for engineering schools and historic restorations of working mills. The Fitz Water Wheel Company photographs (Accession 1995.218) collection has been digitized nearly its entirety; duplicate and near-duplicate items have been omitted from scanning.

Hanes Hosiery Mills Company was established in 1901 as Shamrock Mills, operating out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The company initially produced men's socks, but was an early adopter of nylon hosiery manufacture, a process first created in 1938. Hanes Hosiery Mills researched and developed seamless pantyhose by the mid-1960s. The Floyd Hollenbeck sales kit for Hanes Hosiery Mills Co. stereoviews and viewer (Accession 2013.226) collection is a promotional sales album used by Floyd Hollenbeck (1920-2002), a sales agent for Trimfit Hosiery, a distribution company for Hanes Hosiery Mills Company. Hollenbeck worked out of Los Angeles, California and seemed to have covered a fairly large sales region on the west coast. The album contains twenty-four stereoviews of the Hanes Winston-Salem manufacturing plant and offices from the mid-1960s.

Frank Earle Schoonover (1877-1972) was a prolific commercial illustrator, artist, and avid photographer based in Wilmington, Delaware. Over the course of a six-decade career, he completed more than twenty-five hundred works, primarily illustrations for magazines and books but also landscapes, portraits, murals, book plates, sculpture, and stained-glass windows. In addition to his own art, Schoonover began teaching in the early 1920s. He was active in the Wilmington arts community, and opened his own school of art in Wilmington in 1941. Schoonover was also an avid photographer. In addition to utilizing travel observations, Schoonover relied on the use of human models for his illustrations throughout his career. The Frank E. Schoonover negatives (Accession 2017.239) collection consists of negatives taken by Schoonover, largely for use as source material for his artwork. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

Frank R. Zebley (1883-1960) was a Delaware native collector, photographer, author, and one-time speaker of the Delaware House of Representatives. As a collector, Zebley specialized in “Delawareana,” books and printed material about the First State. The Frank R. Zebley photograph albums (Accession 1968.012) collection includes nearly 1,500 black and white photographs from the city of Wilmington, locations around Delaware, southeastern Pennsylvania, and other places of interest in the mid-Atlantic region. The photos include street scenes, construction and demolition, public buildings, churches, cemeteries, homes, waterfronts, bridges, mills, automobiles, trains, and people. A special thanks to Hagley volunteer Jean Abplanalp for her photograph research on this collection.

In 1929, the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and the Victor Talking Machine Company merged, resulting in the formation of the RCA Victor Company. This merger allowed RCA to consolidate the research, manufacturing,and sales of products and further establish itself as one of the country's leading manufacturers and vendors of radios, phonographs, televisions, and a wide array of consumer and military electronics. The Frederick O. Barnum III collection of RCA Victor Company negatives (Accession 1995.220) collection consists of negatives showing RCA activities and electronic products. These negatives were salvaged by company historian Frederick O. Barnum III from the RCA Camden Plant's photo lab after the plant had been vacated by successor company Martin Marietta Corporation in April 1993. This collection has not been fully digitized.

G.C. Murphy Co. was a chain of discount variety stores founded by George Clinton Murphy in 1906 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. Murphy had been an executive with McCrory stores before opening up his own store. After Murphy's death, two former colleagues purchased the company in 1911 and turned it into a chain of 5c-10c-25c stores. Despite the Depression, the company grew, establishing 181 stores in 11 states. By 1976, the company operated 529 stores. In 1985, the chain was purchased by Ames Department Stores. In 1989, it was sold again, this time to the parent company of McCrory stores, McCrory Corp., which filed for bankruptcy in 2001 and liquidated a short time later The photographs in this collection are of a G.C. Murphy store in Washington, D.C., and were taken around the years 1930-1945. One photograph is an interior shot of the store’s soda fountain counter. Eight other photographs document various window displays.

Gabrielle Josephine Crofton (1873-1952) was one of six children born to Gabrielle Josephine Shubrick Crofton (1835-1894) and Robert Erskine Anderson Crofton (1834-1898). During the time that these diaries were written, Gabrielle Josephine Crofton was residing in Washington, D.C.; her accounts reflect the leisured life of a middle-class, unmarried woman in the first quarter of the 20th century United States. The Gabrielle Josephine Crofton diaries (Accession 1767) cover the years from 1917 to 1926 and describe activities such as attending church, knitting items for soldiers during World War I, leisure activities, and socializing with friends and family. The later diary includes one program from a 1922 graduation ceremony at Georgetown Visitation Convent, a Catholic school for girls whose graduating class that year included Ethel Crofton Hunt (1902-1972), the daughter of Gabrielle Josephine Crofton's sister, Mary Ethel Crofton Hunt (1875-1962).

Genevieve Pittner of Monroe, Michigan, collected roller skating rink stickers between 1941 and 1942. She amassed a large collection by exchanging stickers by mail with other collectors, and she may have been a member of the Universal Roller Skating Sticker Exchange, a national network of sticker enthusiasts who traded. The Genevieve Pittner collection of roller skating rink stickers (Accession 2012.213) consists primarily of roller skating rink stickers during the World War II era. A large album contains most of the stickers in the collection; stickers are attached to album pages and arranged alphabetically by state. The collection also includes notes and correspondence from other sticker traders received by Pittner. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The over 2,400 items in the Gerald A. and Arlene L. Fingerman fabric care memorabilia collection (Accession 2009.0623.GAF) document the history of laundry products between 1875 and the 1970s. The collection contains material from over 1,000 companies and includes soapboxes and ephemera related to laundry soap, bleach, bluing, starch, pressing irons, laundry equipment, and similar products. The Fingerman's collecting interest in fabric care memorabilia results from their involvement in retail dry cleaning and laundry; the couple ran a business in the suburbs of Minneapolis for over thirty-two years. Most of the collection comes from businesses in the United States, but Holland, Switzerland, Malaysia, Australia, and Japan are also represented. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

This small digital collection of materials selected from our Arthur Benning collection of Gray and Rogers, Inc. advertising (Accession 2001.233) includes ads created by the Philadelphia advertising firm Gray & Rogers as part of their award-winning "Big frog in small towns" campaign for the weekly newspaper Grit. The ads ran in publishing trade magazines during the 1970s, highlighting to potential advertisers that Grit targeted rural markets that other publications missed. The firm hired freelance artists to bring the frogs to life, many of whom went on to become notable artists and illustrators. These included, among others, Philadelphia children's book illustrator Charles Santore, pop surrealist Todd Schorr, and science fiction specialist Don Ivan Punchatz, who drew the poster for the first Star Wars film. In 1980, the campaign won best of show in the Addy Awards competition sponsored by the Philadelphia Club of Advertising Women out of 350 entries.

The Harlan & Hollingsworth Corporation began in 1836 as a railroad car manufacturer founded by Mahlon Betts and Samuel N. Pusey. Samuel Harlan joined the firm in 1837, and Elijah Hollingsworth followed in 1841. That same year, Harlan purchased Pusey's interest. After Betts retired in 1849, the firm took the name of Harlan & Hollingsworth. In 1843, the company leased a launching berth on the Christiana River and started doing marine engine work. Its shipbuilding activity increased markedly beginning in the 1850s. The company specialized in private steam yachts and commercial shipbuilding. In 1902, the company was included in the horizontal merger of shipyards put together under the title of the United States Shipbuilding Company, which, in 1905, was reorganized as a subsidiary of the new Bethlehem Steel Corporation. This digital collection consists of photographs from cost books found in a subseries of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation records (Accession 1699). These ledgers summarize material and labor costs by department for ships built between 1902 to 1916. In cases where this information is accompanied by photographic records or other images, that information has been digitized here, along with a cover page providing a basic overview for each contract. The cost books have not been digitized in their entirety.

This digital collection contains the memoirs of brothers Harry Sooy (1875-1927) and Raymond Sooy (1880-1938), documenting their time as recording engineers for the Victor Talking Machine Company. While trained and hired as machinists, the brothers spent their careers at Victor testing, developing, and operating the technology for recording musicians, performers, comedians, and political figures. Covering a period from 1898 to 1931, the memoirs offer unique insight into the early era of recorded sound. These memoirs are part of Record Group 3, 'Administration records, 1899-2008' in the David Sarnoff Research Center records (Accession 2464.09) collection, which is itself part of the David Sarnoff Library collections (Accession 2464). These collections were the holdings of the David Sarnoff Library, founded in 1967 as part of the David Sarnoff Research Center. When the library closed in 2009, its archival collections were donated to Hagley Library.

The Hay’s Fruit Juice Company was founded in in the year 1900 and produced Hay’s Five Fruit, a fruit juice syrup used to make and flavor beverages and desserts. This album was created after September 1923, following the completion of additional construction to a recently purchased new factory at 55-71 York Street, in Portland, Maine. This new location enabled the company to produce three to four thousand bottles of fruit juice syrup a day. The product was entirely produced and stored in the factory until shipping, with separate rooms for pressing fruit, mixing the syrup, filling bottles, and inventory storage. The Hay’s Fruit Juice Company album (Accession 1989.239) contains photographs and advertisements. The photographs are primarily of the factory’s interior and have accompanying captions on the facing pages that describe the manufacturing process of Hay’s Five Fruit. There are two photographs of raspberry fields and workers. The advertisements and labels are for the company’s fruit juice syrup.

Henry C. Walton was an industrial chemist who worked at Andrew Carnegie's Edgar Thomson Steel Works near Pittsburgh in the 1870s. In 1880 Walton became associated with Emile Geyelin, a Philadelphia engineer who had done considerable work for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. as both a machinist and hydraulic engineer. Walton and Geyelin joined with J.A. Mathieu, a charcoal manufacturer, to form Mathieu Geyelin & Walton, Ltd. The firm manufactured lead and calcium acetates for sale to Pittsburgh area steel manufacturers. The Henry C. Walton diary (Accession 1883) describes Walton's work as a chemist at the Edgar Thomson Works, including notations on the Bessemer process and analyses of steel produced by Carnegie and other manufacturers. It also contains information on the formation of Mathieu, Geyelin & Walton, Ltd., , including subsequent contracts with carpenters and merchants.

Herbert Belar (1901-1997) was an inventor and research scientist in the field of acoustical engineering at the RCA David Sarnoff Research Center in Princeton, New Jersey for thirty-eight years. He developed "hi-fi" recording, the phonetic typewriter, and the electronic music synthesizer. Belar was born in Laibach, Austria-Hungary and immigrated to the United States in 1919. He began his career with RCA at RCA Victor Photophone in Camden, New Jersey in 1928 after graduating from Drexel University. He was transferred to RCA Laboratories in Princeton in 1948, where he worked in acoustics under Harry F. Olson (1901-1982) for almost twenty years. While at RCA Laboratories, Belar collaborated with Olson to develop the first musical synthesizers: the RCA Mark I and Mark II The Herbert Belar papers (Accession 2767) collection has not been digitized in its entirety. The selected digitized materials included here relate to Olson and Belar's work with electronic musical instrument research and development.

The Herbert Harwood Jr. Railroad and Transportation collection of photographic negatives (Accession 2019.212) comprises nearly 150,000 images covering all of the twentieth century. The collection includes Harwood’s own work as a railroad photographer as well as the work of others. Among the collection are photographs from many notable photographers active in the 1930s and ‘40s and well as the work of his father-in-law, George M. Beischer, who served as the chief mechanical officer for several railroads, including the fledgling Amtrak in the 1970s. Kevlar is a synthetic fiber developed by chemists Stephanie Kwolek (1923-2014), Paul Morgan (1911-1992), and Herbert Blades in 1965 while working at the DuPont Company. Originally developed with the intent to be used in tires, the unique strength of the fiber made clear numerous other applications. Kevlar is a fiber five times stronger ounce for ounce than steel, but about half the density of fiberglass. Kevlar was first sold commercially in 1971. Best known for its use in protective vests and body armor, Kevlar is also used in optical-fiber cable, and sporting equipment. There are approximately 200 applications of Kevlar. The History of Kevlar oral history interviews (Accession 2014.249) collection documents the research and development processes that transformed Kevlar from a novel polymer in the laboratory to a life-changing product in the marketplace.

Hologic, Inc. is a developer and manufacturer of medical digital imaging instruments with a primary focus on mammography and women's health. The company was founded in 1985 by S. David Ellenbogen (1938-2001) and Jay A. Stein (1942-) in Bedford, Massachusetts. The Hologic Digital Mammography oral histories (Accession 2020.201) collection brings together interviews with the individuals involved in inventing, researching, and commercializing digital mammography and breast tomosynthesis at DuPont, Sterling, and Hologic. The interviews address the founding of Hologic and the development of 3D mammography and breast tomosynthesis. It also covers the sale and consolidation of other companies under Hologic; development of new medical imaging machines; certification of new medical devices; negotiations with the medical insurance industry; and selling medical devices and technical support to healthcare systems and care providers.

Hoopes Brothers & Darlington, Inc. began in West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1867 as a manufacturer of wooden spokes for wheels, and by the 1880s it had become one of the largest wooden wheel makers in the United States. It remained in business long after other wheel factories had closed, manufacturing wooden wheels until the 1970s. The Hoopes Brothers & Darlington Inc. photograph collection (Accession 1969.099) consists of miscellaneous images from the company, largely dating between 1900 and 1948, as well as advertising material and letterheads. The photographs include images of the company's exhibit at the 1876 International Exposition in Philadelphia' an unidentified ca. 1890 trade show' their saw mill in Jackson, Mississippi, ca. 1910; various models of wooden wheels; two automobiles with wooden wheels; and views of the factory.

International Housewares Association is a trade organization that promotes sales and marketing of housewares. It was formed in 1927 when members of the National Home Furnishing Manufacturers Association organized a Chicago exposition to display the products of more than 115 regional housewares manufacturers. The International Housewares Association records (Accession 2245) collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection contains 63 issues of Housewares MarketWatch from the collection's 'IHA Publications and Trade Literature, 1967-2019' series. The magazine is a quarterly publication provided by International Housewares Association and NPD Research Inc., covering point-of-sale and consumer analysis data on products in the areas of small appliances and housewares.

This digital collection combines multiple physical collections from the Library's holdings related to Hudson Maxim (1853-1927), an inventor and chemist best known for his work in the development of smokeless gunpowder and military explosives. These collections include the Hudson Maxim photographs (Accession 1996.312), Hudson Maxim papers (Accession 0509), Hudson Maxim papers (Accession 2147), Hudson Maxim Papers (Accession 2154), and items from our Published Collections. The materials here chronicle Hudson Maxim's life and work from the late 1880's, when he began working for his eldest brother, the inventor Hiram Stevens Maxim (1840-1916), to the final years of his life. They document not only his scientific work, but also his collaborations with the du Pont family and company, as well as his personal business affairs and family life. Split off from the International Latex Corporation, ILC Dover is a special engineering development and manufacturing company based in Frederica, Delaware best known for making space suits for NASA. ILC Dover outfitted every United States astronaut in the Apollo program, including the twelve that walked on the moon. ILC also designed and manufactured the Space Suit Assembly portion of the Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), worn by astronauts during performance of extra-vehicular activity (EVA) on Space Shuttle missions and on the International Space Station. This collection consists of taped interviews conducted during 1994 and 1996 by Douglas N. Lantry, a PhD candidate at the University of Delaware, of engineers and fabricators who worked on the Apollo spacesuit at ILC. The Indiana Ordnance Works was built near Charlestown, Indiana by the DuPont Company for the U.S. government. Construction began in 1940, and by 1941, the Works was manufacturing military explosives, propellants, and smokeless powder. The Works continued to manufacture ordnance for military use throughout the ensuing decades, though it was operated by a variety of corporate entities. In 1964, its name was changed to the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant. In 1992, it was deactivated, and the property was converted to other uses, including an industrial commerce center and a state park. The Indiana Ordnance Works, Ballistics Laboratory photographs (Accession 2001.209) collection consists of photographs of the Ballistics Lab of the Indiana Ordnance Works taken during World War II, including views of testing and test facilities, laboratories, machinery, and male and female workers.

Inside Brown America was a newsletter published by the Institute of Industrial Race Relations and Joseph V. Baker Associates, a public relations firm founded by Joseph V. Baker (1908-1993). Baker was a prominent Black journalist and public relations specialist working out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who also served as the director of the Division of Negro Research and Planning with the Pennsylvania State Department of Labor and Industry. Inside Brown America was one of a number of publications issued through his firm, which provided services to various large corporations and educational institutions. The newsletter, which ran from February 1952 to November 1953, provided Joseph V. Baker Associates' clients with updates on political and economic developments related to Black America. The newsletter also offered news related to Black trade associations and of notable additions of Black professional staff to various corporate entities and government bodies. This digital collection consists of a small number of issues of this newsletter in Hagley Library's collections

The Inter-Society Color Council (ISCC) was founded on February 26, 1931 for the purpose of coordinating the activities of leading technical societies relating to the description, specification, and standardization of color and promoting the practical application of this knowledge in science, art, and industry. National associations and technical societies participating in the ISCC represent a wide array of individuals and organizations across a variety of industries and trade associations. Members of the ISCC can be found in the fields of art; science and technology; manufacturers; producers of color reproduction processes; creators of color effects in graphic design; and related fields. The Inter-Society Color Council records (Accession 2188) and Inter-Society Color Council photographs (Accession 2003.228) collections offer material generated by the ISCC as well as by notable individuals and organizations associated with the society. These collections have not been digitized in their entirety, but efforts have been made to sample widely across the collections, with the exception of artifacts, moving images, and audio.

The Transportation Act of 1920 required railroads to file with the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) for permission to eliminate tracks from their system. Docket cards were created by the ICC when a railroad initially filed a request. The Interstate Commerce Commission railroad abandonment index (Accession 2014.276) collection consists of index cards to finance dockets involving the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central Transportation Company, and Conrail. The cards document line abandonments and financial transactions from the 1920s through 1985. The cards include, on the top line, a docket number, the date filed, and section of the law under which it was filed. The next line indicates the name of the railroad. The short text is an abstract of the case. For an abandonment, the county and state in which the tracks are located are usually indicated, as well as the length of track to be abandoned and the end points of the abandonment as indicated by a town name or mile posts.

During a career which spanned nearly fifty years, Koons earned a reputation as one of the most innovative and influential designers in the packaging industry, with awards in nearly every major packaging competition, including being named Packaging Person of the Year by the Packaging Designers Council in 1982, the fourth year in which the award was bestowed.. These collections include materials documenting his work in marketing and industrial design, his efforts to expand awareness about the historical and contemporary importance of packaging in a consumer economy, his work as an educator in the field of marketing and package design, and his work in advocacy on behalf of underdeveloped and developing nations.

James Watson & Sons, also called the Riverview Wagon Works, was a Wilmington, Delaware, company that started as a wagon-builder and restorer. After 1920, the company began customizing truck bodies, special vehicles (bookmobiles, paddy wagons, etc.), buses, and touring trailers. Many of the photographs in the James Watson & Sons Co. photograph collection (Accession 1999.213) show samples of the company's work on wagons, including noteworthy examples of local Wilmington, Delaware dairy farm wagons and trucks. There are also pictures of delivery vehicle, buses and school buses, ambulances, police and rescue squads, Delaware bookmobiles, moving and hauling trucks, commercial trucks, horse trucks, trailers, and other kinds of vehicles. The collection also includes photographs of the company's workers and factory. There are also a few miscellaneous items, including group photographs and family photographs. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The James Zellner glass plate negatives (Accession 1974.278) collection consists of glass plate negatives showing scenes from Carbon County, Pennsylvania during the second half of the 19th century. The photographs are believed to have been taken by James Zellner (1836-1897), a local photographer, during the 1870s and 1880s. The majority of the images show scenes from Mauch Chunk (now Jim Thorpe) and the surrounding area, the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway, and the waterfalls at Glen Onoko. Mauch Chunk was founded in 1818 to serve as a railroad and coal-shipping center to move coal mined by the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company to markets along the east coast. Much of the coal that reached Mauch Chunk was transported via the Mauch Chunk Switchback Railway, which is also well-represented in this collection. The photographs in this collection document the railway’s use as a tourist attraction and passenger railroad, a secondary use that began in 1861 and became the railway’s primary function after the construction of an 1872 railway tunnel rerouted coal lines.

At its peak, the company employed over 5,000 people and consisted of nine acres and twenty-five buildings around the intersections of 5th Street and Germantown and Montgomery Avenues. Stetson provided generous employee benefits in order to stave off unionization. This led him to establish a school, a hospital, and a building and loan association for his employees, as well as perks such as sports leagues, Christmas turkeys, and Americanization classes. The John B. Stetson Company photographs (Accession 2001.214) collection contains photographs and other material relating to the company. It offers photographs of workers, workspaces, and worker’s amenities. It also includes materials documenting the company’s history and personnel policies.

Tucker Transit History Collection consists of official documents produced or used by Mr. Tucker during his career as a public transit official, records of the pre-SEPTA Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company (1907-1939) and the Philadelphia Transportation Company (1940-1968) that he preserved from loss or destruction, and materials collected out of his interest in the history of transit systems, particularly electric traction lines. The John F. Tucker collection on transit history (Accession 2046) consists of official documents produced or used by Mr. Tucker during his career as a public transit official, records of the pre-SEPTA Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company (1907-1939) and the Philadelphia Transportation Company (1940-1968), and materials collected out of his interest in the history of transit systems, particularly electric traction lines. The collection traces the evolution of the Philadelphia transit system, its extent, routes and services, and of North American rail rapid transit generally. It has not been digitized in its entirety.

John Gordon Rideout (1898-1951) was a noted industrial designer and architect. Rideout began his career in sales, moved into advertising, and eventually opened industrial design firms in Toledo and then Cleveland, Ohio. In 1944, he became one of the 15 founders of the Society of Industrial Designers (SID). The images in this digital collection come from an album of negatives in the John Gordon Rideout papers (Accession 2701) collection. Some of the images, likely dating to the early 1930s, depict Frank Lloyd Wright and his Spring Green, Wisconsin, estate, Taliesin. Others include portraits and candid images of family and friends; the fishing town of Leland, Michigan; an Easter church service; and a Gulf Co. service station. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

John J. Raskob (1879-1950) was a prominent business and political figure in the early twentieth century. A top financial executive for both E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company and the General Motors Corporation, Raskob was heavily involved in politics, serving as chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1928 to 1932. He was also a well-known Catholic noted for his charitable giving. This digital collection is a small selection of items from the John J. Raskob papers (Accession 0473) collection, largely comprising correspondence and pamphlets dating from 1900 to 1950.

John McShain (1898-1989) was a Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.-based building contractor, whose firm, John McShain, Inc. During the 1940s and 1950s, McShain became one of America's leading and most visible construction firms. McShain's notable projects included the Jefferson Memorial (1939), the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library (1939), the State Department Building (1940), National Airport (1941), the Internal Revenue Building (1942), the Pentagon (1943), the Army Map Service Building (1943), the White House renovation (1950-1951), the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. This digital collection contains a selection of materials from the John McShain photographs (Accession 1990.268) and John McShain papers (Accession 2000) collections documenting John McShain's family life and personal interests, his career as a building contractor, and his involvement in horse racing.

Advertising, both print and radio, developed as a prominent industry in the early decades of the twentieth century as popular magazine circulation exploded and the radio became ubiquitous in American households. The John Okolowicz collection of publications and advertising on radio and consumer electronics (Accession 2014.277) consists of digital access copies of publications, including employee magazines, and magazine advertisements for radios and other related household electronics dating from 1912 to 1980. Of note are 141 issues dating from 1945 to 1962 of Philco News, which was the employee newsletter for the Philco Corporation, as well as fifteen issues of Good News about RCA Radiotrons. This collection is comprised of digital access copies. The collector retains the originals.

Opened by marketing pioneer John Wanamaker (1838-1922) at 13th and Market Streets in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1876, Wanamaker’s department store was one of America’s first modern department stores. Wanamaker's goal was to revolutionize the experience of shopping, turning a mundane activity into a grand event. Wanamaker’s was well-ventilated, decorated with contemporary art, with large rooms that, after 1911, included a 150-foot-high Grand Court featuring attractions like the world’s second largest organ. The department store was the first to feature electric lighting, to adopt the telephone, and to install a pneumatic tube delivery systems for transporting documents and cash deposits throughout the building. It also relied on innovations in customer service and marketing, including the substitution of of haggling for prices in favor of a set sales price. This decision was partly due to Wanamaker’s desire to make shopping a more pleasurable, less adversarial experience. But it was also informed by his devout Presbyterian faith, which led him to decide that “if everyone was equal before God, then everyone should be equal before price”. This digital collection offers a selection of individually accessioned catalogs from the Wanamaker department store in Hagley Library's collections.

Joe Weisbecker was an engineer at RCA who invented an 8-bit microcomputer architecture that became the foundation of RCA’s microprocessor business. During the 1970s, he contributed to the development of RCA’s programmable video game and educational systems: FRED, STUDIO II, STUDIO III, and STUDIO IV, and Microtutor. Weisbecker also ran his own business, Komputer Pastimes, which created computer language-based games for children and adults, children’s books, toys, and greeting cards. This digital collection comprises digital files extracted from cassette tapes found in Weisbecker's collection as well as selected materials related to RCA's video game systems and Komputer Pastimes. The video clips of gameplay were provided by Kevin Bunch working from binaries converted from tapes by Andy Modla and Marcel van Tongeren. For more information, see the emulator developed and maintained by Marcel van Tongeren. These materials are part of Record Group 11, 'Solid State Research Division records, 1899-2001' in the David Sarnoff Research Center records (Accession 2464.09) collection, which is itself part of the David Sarnoff Library collections (Accession 2464). These collections were the holdings of the David Sarnoff Library, founded in 1967 as part of the David Sarnoff Research Center. When the library closed in 2009, its archival collections were donated to Hagley Library.

Joseph Bancroft, an Englishman trained in textile weaving in Lancashire, established his own cotton mill on the Brandywine near Wilmington, Delaware in 1831. The firm was incorporated as the Joseph Bancroft & Sons Company in 1889. This digital collection includes material documenting the Joseph Bancroft & Sons textile mills from Hagley's collection of Joseph Bancroft and Sons Company photographs (Accession 1969.025). It also draws extensively from our Joseph Bancroft and Sons Company, Miss America collection (Accession 1972.430). This latter collection consists of general advertising, fashion photography, and product information for textiles produced and marketed by Bancroft in the 20th century. It also documents the Joseph Bancroft & Sons Company's sponsorship of the Miss America Pageant and the promotion of fabrics by Miss America from the years 1953 to 1967.

Joseph T. Richards (1845-1933) was a career civil engineer with the Pennsylvania Railroad Company who participated in several of their large construction projects in the first decade of the twentieth century. Richards's chief accomplishments were helping to direct the restoration of PRR lines following the massive destruction wrought by the Johnstown Flood of 1889 and contributing to the railroad aspects of the design for Washington Union Station (1907) and Pennsylvania Station in New York (1910). The Joseph T. Richards portfolio of notes and drawings on the Pennsylvania Station project (Accession 2471) collection consists of the contents of a small portfolio of documents relating to the construction of the Pennsylvania Station and its associated yards and terminals belonging to Joseph T. Richards (1845-1933). The collection complements the much more extensive coverage of Pennsylvania Station and its associated tunnels in other Hagley Library accessions.

The leather manufacturing firm of Joshua Conner & Son was founded in 1848 by James Conner (1813-1880). It moved to Wilmington, Delaware, in 1858. After 1915, it operated under the name of Joshua Conner & Son, as the business was continued by Joshua Conner’s son, Joshua Conner (1842-1917), and grandson, Joshua Christy Conner (1883-1964). Early operations included the manufacture of harness, saddles, and trunks. Later the firm sold all types of trunks, luggage and athletic equipment, leather novelties, equestrian equipment, blankets and flags. It was recognized as one of the leading retail establishments in Delaware. The Joshua Conner & Son leather goods store photographs (Accession 1995.205) collection consists of five photographs of the storefront, store interiors and portraits of the proprietors. There are two views of the Conner storefront at 235-237 Market St., Wilmington, Delaware, and one interior view showing a display counter and two clerks. In addition, there are studio portraits of Joshua Conner and Joshua Christy Conner, his son.

Keith Reeves Rodney (1875-1956) was a chemist or metallurgical engineer associated with the Fairmount Steel Company in Philadelphia. In 1905 he and several companions toured a number of the steel mills and machine shops in France, Italy, Sweden, and England. Of the two diaries in the Keith Reeves Rodney diaries (Accession 1884) collection, the first merely records his travels. It contains little technical information but lists places visited, hotels, sightseeing tours, names of contacts and notations on the reception (friendly or unfriendly) he received at particular sites. The second diary contains more detailed descriptions of the various mills and shops visited. It provides data on the processes employed and the rates of operation. It represents an interesting vignette of the European steel and ordnance industries during a period of rapid growth for German and Italian companies and a period of decline for French and English firms.

Kelvinator was founded in Detroit in 1916 after previously operating as the Electro-Automatic Refrigerating Company. Nathaniel B. Wales (1883-1974) was the founding engineer, and he had been developing home refrigeration units. He received financial backing from automobile executive Arnold H. Goss. The company name was an ode to the British physicist who developed the absolute temperature scale that also bears his name, Lord Kelvin. By 1923, Kelvinator controlled 80% of the electric refrigerator market. In the 1920s, Kelvinator acquired both Leonard Refrigerator Company and Nizer Corporation. In 1937, it merged with Nash Motor Company and became a division of Nash-Kelvinator. The company expanded into other household appliances like hot water heaters, air conditioners, and electric ranges. In 1968, Kelvinator was purchased by White Consolidated Industries, which in turn was purchased by A. B. Electrolux in 1986. The Kelvinator Corporation electric refrigerators album (Accession 1997.229) appears to be a wholesaler's catalog showing sketched illustrations of the exteriors and interiors of Kelvinator refrigerator models; three of the prints show only compressors and motors. No price list or text is included.

Ken White Associates, Inc., formed by industrial designer Ken White in 1947, was a design firm that developed plans and designs for thousands of independent and academic bookstores throughout the United States, as well as many other types of retail businesses. The company also played a leading role in introducing convenience stores and innovative food service options on college campuses. The Ken White Associates, Inc. records (Accession 2377) collection includes organizational files documenting the corporate organization; financial papers; project files; publications by White and his son, as well as the records of the partnerships and other companies White formed as he expanded his business and services. The collection also contains files on White's professional activities, including papers related to conferences, conventions, and trade shows, memberships in various organizations, and seminars and talks. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Lake Mohonk Mountain House was a noted summer resort hotel located on Lake Mohonk in the Shawangunk Mountains of Ulster County, northwest of New York City. The Lake Mohonk Mountain House data file collection (Accession 2280) consists of advertisements, trade literature, trade catalogs and other publications collected by Daniel Smiley (1796-1878), former manager of the Lake Mohonk Mountain House, in the course of planning and executing new projects, maintaining the building and grounds, and purchasing new furnishings and equipment. This material is accompanied by fairly routine letters of request and replies from sales representatives. There are also some copies of hotel menus and programs for social events. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Lehigh Valley Railroad glass plate negatives (Accession 1971.598) collection was purchased in 1971 as part of a lot that included two other small collections. The photographer is unknown, but a box included in the collection, as well as the images themselves, associate fifteen of the twenty-two images with the Lehigh Valley Railroad. While the photographs in this collection are undated, engine numbers visible in the images suggest that these glass negatives were created no earlier than 1934 and no later than 1948, assuming that they were taken roughly contemporaneously. There are an additional seven glass negatives, larger than the first fifteen, depicting a small variety of undated, unidentified scenes. The relationship of these items to the negatives depicting the rolling stock of the Lehigh Valley Railroad is unclear, as is their relationship to one another. These images depict a naval sailing vessel that is probably the USS Constitution, the shipwrecked SS Morro Castle, a group photograph in front a church, and two views of an outdoor recreation area. The image of the SS Morro Castle likely dates to 1934, and the remaining six may as well.

He began the manufacture of punched screens and grantings at Carbondale, Pa., in 1876 and organized the Hendrick Manufacturing Company in 1885. The Letterpress copybook of E. E. Hendrick, 1899-1903 (Accession 2528) contain tissue copies of E. E. Hendrick's outgoing correspondence from 1899 to 1903. Although nominally dealing with his actions as president of the Hendrick Manufacturing Company, most of the letters concern personal business. Most importantly, they reveal Hendicks' interest in early automobiles, with correspondence with dealers and suppliers. Hendrick tried both electric and steam automobiles, and many of the letters are in the nature of complaints. The letters reveal the enthusiasms and frustrations of an early motorist, who, although wealthy and mechanically gifted, was not a millionaire sportsman or race driver. The letterbook has not been digitized in its entirety. The online collection comprises only the correspondence relating to automobiles.

It specializes in representing industrial trade unions as well as large financial institutions and corporations facing restructuring and bankruptcy issues. Michael Locker is founder and president of the firm, and is a noted analyst of the steel industry. For over thirty years, Michael Locker has also been editor and publisher of Steel Industry Update, a trade newsletter for the steel industry. The publication is widely distributed to unions representing workers in the industry, steel industry management and executives, and financial experts with interests in the steel industry. Hagley Library's holdings of the publication are digital-only, and cover a range starting with the second issue in 1986 to 2019.

The Link-Belt Company was founded by William Dana Ewart (1851-1908), who had invented the detachable link-belt in 1874. The flexible metal belt provided a superior system of power transmission and was first used widely in farm machinery. It was later introduced in industry wherever endless-belt motion was required, particularly for elevating and conveying grain, coal, etc. The Locomotive Coaling Stations, Link-Belt Co. booklet of cyanotype photographs (Accession 1982.301) is a booklet of 11 cyanotype photographs of locomotive coaling stations designed, erected, and equipped by the Link-Belt Engineering Company. The views include coaling stations in Croton, East Albany, and Lyons, New York; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and New Buffalo, Michigan built for the New York Central and Hudson Railroad, the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, and the Chicago and Western Michigan Railway Company. The photographs show details of conveyor belts and bottom dumping coal cars. Every photograph has a caption.

This collection was purchased as a lot from a dealer in 1969. It includes an array of subjects, though the majority of the identified images document locomotives, railroad cars, railroad stations, and other railroad infrastructure. Railroads represented in these images include the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, Central Railroad of New Jersey, Erie Railroad, Lehigh Valley Railroad, New York Central Lines, Pennsylvania Railroad, Reading Railroad, as well as a small number of other railway companies. The collection also includes landscapes and cityscapes, many of which were taken by photographers William H. Rau (1855-1921) and James Zellner (1836-1897). All of the photographs in the Locomotives and views of Mauch Chunk contact photographs and negatives (Accession 1969.092) collection are undated, though some of them can be assigned approximate dates based on information available. While a number of the dates assigned are questionable, most of the images in this collection appear to have been captured between approximately 1860 and 1950. Many locations are currently unidentified, but where it is possible to identify the locations in these images, the large majority of images document sites in Pennsylvania

The brothers Louis Edward Levy (1846-1919) and Max Levy (1857-1926) founded a photoengraving business in Baltimore in 1875. In 1877 they moved to Philadelphia and reorganized the firm as the Levytype Company. Here, they introduced their invention of a new photochemical engraving process, which they called "Levy-type". Other inventions followed, including the engraved glass grating known as the "Levy line screen"; the acid blast, or etching machine; and the etch-powdering machine. In 1900, the firm was renamed the Graphic Arts Company, and the brothers added a printing and publishing department to their business. The Louis E. and Max Levy photograph album (Accession 1976.252) contains personal cyanotype photographs. Included are views of a house in Philadelphia; the Pennsylvania Academy of Natural Science; scenes in Massachusetts, including exterior photographs of the Alcott House and the Hawthorn house in Concord, and the Jonathan Fairbanks House in Dedham; a biology class at M.I.T.; snapshots of children and other people; an unidentified photographer and his camera; and various interiors.

Colonel Louis de Tousard (1749-1817) was a French military officer who served in the American Revolution with Marquis de Lafayette. He was involved in the ill-fated Canadian campaign and in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown. This digital collection consists of a journal and letter book kept by Tousard. The journal dates to 1791-1792 and was compiled by Tousard while a prisoner at L'Abbaye accused of counter-​revolutionary activities during the 1791 slave insurrection in Saint Domingue (now Haiti) led by Toussaint L'Ouverture. The letter book, dated 1796-1802, documents Tousard's second career in the United States Army. The materials here were digitized from microfilm copies of Hagley Library's Col. A. L. de Tousard letterbook (Accession 0796) and the Louis Tousard journal (Accession 0874).

Lukens Steel Company was a medium-sized producer of specialty steel products and one of the top three producers of steel plate in the United States. Lukens Steel Company is noted for being the first industrial company in the United States led by a woman, Rebecca Lukens (1794-1854). The Lukens Steel Company newsletters (Accession 2020.209) is an online collection of the employee newsletter of the Lukens Steel Company produced between 1935 and 1989. The newsletter was called Lukens Plate through 1949, then was renamed Lukens Life after 1950. The issues include information about the Lukens community; retirement, engagement, and wedding announcements of Lukens employees; and other relevant industry news.

Lukens operated continuously at its Coatesville, Pennsylvania site since 1810. It was controlled by members of the Pennock, Lukens and Huston families in direct succession for over 180 years; the company is noted for being the first industrial company in the United States led by a woman, Rebecca Lukens (1794-1854). MCI Communications Corporation (MCI) was one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world. It was incorporated in Delaware in 1968 as Microwave Communications of America, Inc., to provide businesses with nationwide microwave telecommunications services. MCI-AT&T antitrust litigation (1974-1985) led to AT&T's divestiture of its regional carriers, changing the telecommunications industry into a business open to competition. In 2006, the company was bought by Verizon. This digital collection offers selections from the MCI Communications Corporation photographs and audiovisual materials (Accession 2000.239) collection of video, audio, and photographic materials documenting the activities of MCI and its subsidiaries as well as the development of a competitive telecommunications industry in the United States and worldwide. It also offers selections from the MCI Communications Corporation records (Accession 2225) collection, which documents all facets of MCI history from 1968 to the end of the 1990s, as well as changes in the American telecommunications regulatory policy, legislation, and public perception of the industry. Documents in this collection also include records of MCI's subsidiaries and their predecessors starting as early as 1849.

Marc Harrison (1936-1998) was an industrial designer and pioneer of universal design, an approach to industrial design whose principles prioritize accessibility for people regardless of age and ability in product and environment creation. This digital collection includes selections from the Marc Harrison papers (Accession 2193) and Marc Harrison photograph collection (Accession 2005.255). These collections document Harrison's career at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and his private consulting firm, Marc Harrison Associates. Notable projects represented include his work on the Universal Kitchen and his most famous design, the Cuisinart food processor. Notable client companies and organizations documented in the collections include the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, the American Red Cross, the International Lead and Zinc Research Organization (ILZRO), Krups, Chemex, and Cuisinart.

Marshall Johnson (1938 - ), an industrial designer, worked for some of the most well-known small appliance companies and designed many popular products. He began working at Black & Decker, Inc., designing portable power tools and lawn and garden power tools. He went on to work as a corporate industrial designer for ALCOA, and later as a designer of small appliances and cookware for Wear-Ever, Proctor Silex, and Hamilton Beach, as those companies merged and evolved through the years. The Marshall B. Johnson research collection of industrial design and housewares (Accession 2268) consists of Johnson's career files and artifacts from the various companies for whom he worked, historical and research materials on the companies and their products, files on industrial designers, and Johnson's personal papers which include materials on his family, childhood, education, interests, and other activities.

Martha Furnace was an iron plantation built in 1793 by the Pennsylvania ironmaster Isaac Potts (1750-1803) on a branch of the Wading River two miles above Harrisville in eastern Burlington County, New Jersey. The Martha Furnace daybook/diary (Accession 0339) is a combined daybook and diary covering the years 1808 to 1815, with operating and statistical data entered on the left-hand leaves and notes on the occurrences of the day entered on the right-hand leaves. The daybook portion of the volume includes time sheets, lists of workmen, and records of consumption of raw materials and output of finished products. As such it is an important source on the technical performance of an early 19th century charcoal iron plantation. The diary portion mentions workers, clerks, the visiting owners, and persons from the surrounding country doing business with the furnace. It describes work rhythms, celebrations, drunkenness, accidents, illnesses and deaths within the community, with occasional references to larger events in the world beyond the Pine Barrens. It also delineates the working relationships between Martha Furnace and nearby ironworks

In 1887, the Pennsylvania Steel Company constructed a steel plant at Sparrow's Point, Maryland on the mouth of the Patapsco River. Shortly after construction was completed, the plant was incorporated as the Maryland Steel Company of Baltimore County. That same year, 1891, the Marine Department, which included a shipyard, was created. The steel-works and shipyard continued to operate as the Maryland Steel Company until 1916, when Bethlehem Steel acquired the Pennsylvania Steel Company and its subsidiary, Maryland Steel. The Maryland Steel Co. photograph album (Accession 2008.224) collection consists of 3 albums containing 204 cyanotype photographs taken between 1890 and 1894. The first album contains exterior and interior photographs of buildings involved in steel production and steel workers. The second album consists of photographs of the company’s shipyard, including construction of the shipyard as well as interior and exterior photographs of shipyard buildings in use. The third album documents the construction and launch of ships built by the company, primarily tugs and coastal passenger steamships

The Matheson Automobile Company photographs (Accession 1989.327) collection includes 135 images dating largely from 1901 to 1912 from the Matheson Automobile Company, a small automaker headquartered out of Holyoke, Massachusetts and later Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. Matheson automobiles were particularly popular for the power they provided, winning trophies in numerous hill climb competitions in the first decade of the twentieth century. The company's hand-built and custom-made cars were eventually pushed out of the market by smaller, cheaper, more mass-produced vehicles. The images in the collection depict automobile races, a Matheson European tour, and Matheson automobiles being manufactured and in use. The images in this collection were loaned for copy to Hagley Museum and Library in 1989; they were scanned from copies of originals on 4x5 prints

The Maxim Silencer Company was the first company to manufacture gun silencers for commercial use. The company was founded in 1908 as the Maxim Silent Firearms Company by the engineer and inventor Hiram Percy Maxim (1869-1936) in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1912, Maxim incorporated his business as the Maxim Silencer Company. During World War I, the company produced silencers for the United States Armed Forces snipers and sharpshooters. Commercial sales of the silencer ended in a few years prior to a 1934 law prohibiting private ownership. During World War II, the company produced military engine-exhaust silencers. The Maxim Silencer Company photographs (Accession 2015.288) collection consists of photographs of rifles with silencers, the company's World War II Army E. Navy award ceremony, and a few images of Hiram Percy Maxim and his son Hiram Hamilton Maxim (1900-1992).

The Merchants Coal Company mined semi-bituminous coal in the early twentieth century. The company was a subsidiary of United Coal Company. In 1919, the company became the Hillman Coal and Coke Company, named after the United Coal Company’s primary stockholder, J.H. Hillman, who then merged the company with the mining operations of J.H. Hillman & Sons. The first president and supervisor of the company, Thomas Boswell (1861-1929), created the company town of Boswell, Pennsylvania. The company purchased farms consisting of 14,000 acres and then laid out 1,600 lots on which company houses were built, and developed a 1,100 foot slope entry mine in 1901. The town and its mine were serviced by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company. The mine, Orenda Mine #1, extracted semi-bituminous coal. At its peak in the 20th century, the mine employed 900 workers and extracted over 3,000 tons of coal a day. The Merchants Coal Company photographs (Accession 1991.227) collection contains images of early construction in Boswell, showing views of a steel bridge over Quemahoning Creek, tipple, company housing, brick plant, mouth of mine, power house, and a temporary company store.

Following the repeal of national Prohibition in 1933, many Americans were eager to once again legally purchase beer, wine, and liquor. It was not long before a domestic alcoholic beverage industry soon re-emerged to meet this consumer demand. These industries and businesses would soon get a further economic boost in the years after World War II, as an increasingly affluent white middle class relocated to the nation's growing suburbs, where larger living spaces combined with disposable income to create new opportunities for private entertaining and the accumulation of consumer products. The items in this digital collection represent a portion of Hagley Library's holdings across a variety of accessions and collections documenting liquor manufacturers' and distributors' activities and outreach to these consumers, as well as the attitudes, trends, and material objects that made up American cocktail culture during this era.

The Midvale Steel Company manufactured steel parts for the railroad and the armaments industries. The company was established in 1867 in the Nicetown area of Germantown, Philadelphia by William Butcher. Upon his death in 1871, the Butcher Steel Works was taken over by the principal stockholders. The renamed Midvale Steel Works became best known for its its early experimentation with alloy steels and for its production of railroad wheels cast from open-hearth steel, one of the earliest uses of this type of steel in the United States.. In 1880, it was renamed the Midvale Steel Company. It began manufacturing ordnance in 1895 and marine engines in 1900. Expansion during World War I led to a new name in 1915; the Midvale Steel and Ordnance Company, and additional plants in Johnstown and Coatesville, PA. In 1923, these new plants were acquired by the Bethlehem Steel Company. In 1955, the Philadelphia works merged with the Heppenstall Steel Company to become Midvale-Heppenstall Company. The Philadelphia plant closed in 1976.. This album contains photographs showing exteriors and interiors of Midvale Steel facilities in the Nicetown area of Germantown. There are also close-ups of machinery, products (including naval guns, railroad wheels, propellers, and miscellaneous castings), and tests of armor plate.

The Midvale Steel Company was established in 1867 in the Nicetown area of Germantown, Philadelphia by English steel-maker William Butcher (circa 1791-1871). Upon his death in 1871, the Butcher Steel Works became the Midvale Steel Works with engineer Wiliam Sellers (1824-1905) as president. The company's name changed again in 1880 to the Midvale Steel Company. The Midvale Steel and Ordnance Company motion picture films (Accession 1970.034) collection consists of five reels of film that document operations at the Midvale Steel Plant. While the reels are not dated, they are believed to be from 1919. The films document the various stages of production at the plant with a focus on the precision steel making process. The films show the various stages of steel production at the plant, and include footage of an integrated workforce with African American and white employees working together on the shop floor.

The Morris family of Philadelphia were brewers, merchants, land speculators, manufacturers, and prominent participants in public affairs. Their presence in the region dates back to Anthony Morris, a Quaker who emigrated to Burlington, New Jersey in 1682, relocating to Philadelphia about three years later. John Thompson Morris (1847-1915) founded the Morris Arboretum in Germantown, Pennsylvania and served as overseer of public schools in Philadelphia. He and his sister Lydia (1849-1932) traveled around the world together on several Grand Tour trips from 1881 to 1906. The Morris travel albums (Accession 1976.432) collection contains fourteen albums of photographs and postcards from their travels. Only two of the albums have been digitized: Album 11,"France, Norway and Russia, 1903, Vol. 1" (which also includes Germany) and Album 12, "France, Norway and Russia, 1903, Vol. 2" (which also includes Germany, Sweden, and Finland).

The Morse Dry Dock and Repair Company was founded in New York City in the 1880s as the Morse Iron Works, a small shipsmithing business. Over time, the company grew to become one of the nation's largest ship repair and ship refitting facilities. The company merged with five other similar businesses in 1929 to form United Dry Docks, Inc. The Morse Dry Dock Dial was an in-house monthly periodical for employees of the company. According to company founder and president Edward P. Morse (1859-1930), the magazine was intended "to bring our men closer together, to make them familiar with the doings in the yard and to arouse their interest in the welfare of the company". The magazine was staffed with professional journalists and commissioned work from a number of notable illustrators and artists, particularly Edward Hopper (1882-1967), who was responsible for the cover artwork of a number of issues. Morse Dry Dock Dial is call number f VM301.M67 M67 in Hagley Library's collections. The Library's run of issues is incomplete, but dates from the first issue in 1918 to 1923.

NRG Energy, Inc. is an energy company headquartered in Houston, Texas. The company was formerly a subsidiary of formerly Northern States Power Company (later Xcel Energy) but became an independent corporation in 2000. The companies activities entail generating energy and delivering electricity to the public using natural gas generation, coal generation, oil generation, nuclear generation, wind generation, utility-scale generation, and distributed solar generation. Beginning in 2009, the company began investing resources in becoming a green energy producer and developing clean energy projects like wind power, solar thermal energy, photovoltaic, and distributed solar power facilities, and repowering of some of their traditional coal plants with biomass. This digital collection of Sustainability Reports released by the company document NRG Energy's activities between 2010 and 2020 toward that goal, as well as other markers of sustainability and corporate responsibility such as community giving, transparency, diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Chamber of Commerce of the United States is the world’s largest commercial association. Chamber members range from small businesses and local chambers to leading industry associations and large corporations. The Chamber traces its origins to an April 22, 1912, conference of commercial and trade organizations called by President William Howard Taft. The goal was to form a national group to advise the government on issues facing industry and business throughout the country.​ Nation’s Business was a monthly publication from the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. The Chamber used the publication to inform the business community about commercial trends and to solidify political support around key positions on government policies regarding business and economic life. Nation's Business is call number f HF1.N38 in the Hagley Library's Published Collections Department; our holdings cover all the years of its publication (1912 to 1999), with most years' issues included in their entirety. The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) was organized in Ohio in 1895 with the goal to protect American goods from foreign competition and to promote trade expansion. The organization continues today as the largest manufacturing trade association in the United States, representing small and large manufacturers in every industrial sector and in all fifty states. This digital collection draws from multiple collections and accessions at Hagley Library. These include materials originating from the National Association of Manufacturers in the library's Published Collections Department, the National Association of Manufacturers records (Accession 1411) collection, and the National Association of Manufacturers photographs and audiovisual materials (Accession 1973.418) collection. These records provide comprehensive documentation of the organization's programs and activities from its founding in 1895 to the present. They have not been digitized in their entirety; this digital collections contains a selection of items primarily dating to the 1960s and 1970s.

The National Automobile Dealer's Association (NADA) was founded in 1917 to represent the interests of auto dealers in the United States. Today, the trade association is advocacy organization representing over 16,000 automobile dealers in outreach to automobile manufacturers, the federal government, the media, and consumers. The materials in the National Automobile Dealers Association audiovisual materials and publications (Accession 2014.274) collection include NADA publications covering 1934 to 2014, NADA convention materials, press releases, and video content. These materials were loaned for copy to Hagley Library in 2014; originals have been retained by the National Automobile Dealers Association. The audiovisual materials in this collection focus primarily on coverage of events, news segments, automobile manufacturer footage and other programs pertaining to NADA, while the publications focus on industry news, products, regulations, and legislation.

The 1934 National Electrical and Radio Exposition was held in New York City at Madison Square Garden from September 19th to the 29th. The Electrical Association of New York organized the exposition, which brought together manufacturers, retailers, and customers. The exposition included national manufacturers and large retailers from around the country to display, demonstrate, and sell their products. Among the more prominent products featured at the expositions during this period were radios, household appliances (vacuums, ovens, refrigerators, etc.), home/industrial lighting, and heating/air conditioning technology. The National Electrical and Radio Exposition album (Accession 2015.289) contains 45 photographs taken during the exposition. The photographs are primarily of various companies' individual displays. Companies represented include RCA, Westinghouse Electric, Singer Sewing Machine, General Electric, Hoover, Leonard, among others.

The National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) was established on May 28, 1914 to coordinate the foreign trade activities of the United States. The convention appointed thirty-five delegates to serve as charter members of the NFTC, with James A. Farrell (1863-1943), then-President of U.S. Steel, the new organization's first chairman. The National Foreign Trade Council (NFTC) records (Accession 2345) collection chronicles U.S. corporate policy toward the most pressing issues of foreign trade in the twentieth century, from the Council's initial charge in 1914 to "àcoordinate the foreign trade activities of the nation." Records prior to the 1936 incorporation are slight; the Council became progressively more active, and its records more substantial, in the immediate pre-war period and especially in the period of trade reconstruction immediately following the Second World War. The publications received from the NFTC are also not complete, and the collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Committee on Urban Conditions Among Negroes in New York was established in 1910 to assist black migrants arriving from the rural South in adjusting to life in the urban North. Following a series of mergers, the organization's name was changed and shortened to the National Urban League in 1920. The interracial coalition of civil rights advocates that made up the League adopted a mission to help African-Americans "to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights." This mission was manifested through the provision of community-based social services, advocacy on the behalf of black workers, and other efforts to address the problems black Americans faced in securing equal access to employment, recreation, education, housing, medical care, and government services. This digital collection contains publications in the Hagley Library's catalog that were issued by the national and regional branches of the Urban League. In addition to the publications below, the Library also carries Opportunity: A Journal of Negro Life, an academic and literary journal published by the National Urban League from 1923 to 1949.

The New York tunnel extension was a huge project the Pennsylvania Railroad undertook between the years 1900 and 1910 in order to run passenger trains directly into a centrally located station in New York City. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company photograph collection (Accession 1972.432) contains a number of different images related to the Pennsylvania Railroad. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection offers one album from the physical collection; an album of 37 black and white photographs by the New York City photographer De W. C. Ward, which document the recently completed tunnel extension with images of the exterior and interior of Pennsylvania Station as well as nearby freight yards, railroad tunnels, rail stations, and railroad service buildings.

Pigment manufacturing began at the site of the Newport Pigment Plant in Newport, Delaware in 1902 when the site was owned and operated by Henrik J. Krebs. In 1929, E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company purchased the plant. DuPont continued to use the plant to manufacture a variety of pigments until the plant was purchased by CIBA‐GEIGY in 1984. Newport News was an in-house employee magazine edited by and printed for employees of the plant. Hagley Library's holdings of this magazine are incomplete. The earliest issues date to 1947, the periodical's fifth year of publication, while the latest date to 1983. This title is call number HD9651.9.D94 N49 in Hagley Library's collections.

The story of harnessing the waterpower of Niagara Falls dates from 1890 when a 'power tunnel' was dug to bring the water to Power Station No. 1, an electrical power station with three AC dynamos built by Westinghouse. In 1895, the Niagara Falls Hydraulic Power and Manufacturing Company started building Power Station No. 2. These stations began supplying electricity to Buffalo at midnight on November 16, 1896 and continued to do so until being closed in 1961. Many of the photographs in the Niagara Falls Power Company power generation facility photograph album (Accession 1990.265) document the erection of wooden poles for power transmission lines. There are also some photographs showing the power houses and transformer building which was designed by Stanford White of McKim, Mead & White; these include exteriors as well as interiors. The latter includes 3 phase rotary AC generators made by General Electric and air blast transformers. Some photographs show the Niagara River Rapids and of the Niagara Falls Power Company's interurban trolley line.

Nora C. Edwards established the Edwards Skirt Supporter Company around 1903 in Spooner, Wisconsin to market and sell her patented invention. The purpose of the skirt supporter was to fasten a dress skirt and a shirt waist together, preventing the shirt waist from slipping up the back and the dress skirt from dropping below the waistline. From 1903 to early 1905, Edwards traveled throughout the Southern and Midwestern United States, making contacts and hiring women agents to sell the skirt supporters. By September 1905, Nora Edwards permanently relocated to Buffalo, New York, where she maintained the company's headquarters. The Nora C. Edwards papers (Accession 2036) collection comprises personal and business correspondence received by Nora Edwards between 1887 and 1917 from family members, agents, friends, and patent attorneys. The letters often combine personal and business matters. Letters from friends and family members mention Edwards’ business as well as family matters and give descriptive accounts of life in rural Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Indiana. Letters from agents for the company contain orders and descriptions of working habits.

The Oral histories on work and daily life in the Brandywine Valley (Accession 1970.370) collection contains approximately 200 interviews conducted between 1953 and 1990 with people who lived and worked in New Castle County, Delaware. The recollections of the subjects cover a period from about 1900 to 1960. While the majority of the interviews are with those who have a connection with the DuPont Company or du Pont family either as employees or inhabitants of the area surrounding the company's operation on the Brandywine River, the collection also includes interviews with those who worked in other industries in Delaware during this era such as Hodgson Woolen Mill, Lobdell Car Wheel Company, Hoopes Brother & Darlington, and Joseph Bancroft & Sons. In addition to documenting work and labor during this period, the interviewers delve deeply into the social and cultural lives of their subjects. Issues related to domesticity, gender, education, childhood, ethnicity, medicine, etc. are among the topics covered in the interviews. Also of note are interviews with a journalist (Fred Reybold) and an early broadcaster (Willard Wilson) who worked in Delaware.

Wallace Hume Carothers (1896-1937) was chemist and inventor of Neoprene artificial rubber and Nylon synthetic fiber. He worked as a chemist in E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company's Fundamental Research Program from 1928 until his death in 1937. The Oral history interviews on Wallace Carothers (Accession 1994.311) collection contains ten interviews conducted in July and August of 1978 with Carothers’s friends, family, and colleagues. Five of the interviews were recorded as well as transcribed, while others were only transcribed. The interviewees primarily share stories and focus on their feelings surrounding Carothers’s personality, work, and suicide. Helen Sweetman, Carothers’s wife, is also a common subject. Other topics include the DuPont Experimental Station, life in mid-twentieth century Wilmington, Delaware, and Carothers’s election to the National Academy of Sciences.

For over sixty years, Zachary Taylor Vinson (1933-2009) amassed a large and comprehensive collection of printed material documenting on the history transportation, particularly automobiles. The Oral history interviews on Z. Taylor Vinson (Accession 2013.265) collection is the result of an oral history project initiated to provide supplementary material for Hagley’s 2015 exhibit, 'Driving Desire', which features items from the Z. Taylor Vinson collection of transportation ephemera (Accession 20100108.ZTV) and Z. Taylor Vinson collection of transportation lithographs (Accession 2010.203). The three interviewees, Rick Shnitzler, Fred Simeone, and Yann Saunders, all were personal acquaintances of Z. Taylor Vinson as well as highly involved in either collecting or dealing auto ephemera and/or automobiles. For more information, see 'Collecting Paper Cars: Z. Over half the mushrooms in the United States are grown in and around the town of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, which proudly calls itself the mushroom capital of the world. Beginning around the turn of the century, Quaker greenhouse owners began using the space below their beds to grow mushrooms. They hired Italian laborers, who then started their own mushroom farms. Today, Italian-American families own most of the mushroom companies in the area, and the labor force has shifted as well, from Puerto Ricans to Mexicans, as Pennsylvania’s mushroom farms became a destination for migrant farm workers looking for reliable, year-round employment in one place. The Oral history interviews on cultivated mushroom industry (Accession 2018.219) collection brings together interviews with mushroom growers and owners of mushroom businesses whose experiences capture the many different kinds of work and knowledge involved in mushroom cultivation, harvesting, packing, distribution, and marketing, and how those processes have changed over time.

John Raskob (1879-1950) was a financial executive for the E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., General Motors, and financier of the Empire State Building. During the 1920s Raskob became active in Democratic Party politics and from 1928 to 1932 served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He was an important financial backer of Governor Alfred E. Smith (1873-1944) when he ran for president in 1928. The Oral history interviews with John J. Raskob family (Accession 2004.208) collection consists of seven oral history interviews conducted between 2004 and 2005 with members of John J. Raskob’s immediate family, primarily his children and grandchildren. The interviews are largely personal in nature and often focus on family relationships. Each interviewee discusses their birth, education, and travels. Memories of times spent at the various family estates are recounted. Those present on a cruise to Europe in 1950 share their recollections about the trip. Some speak of the death of Bill Raskob, Yvonne Raskob, and Catherine Raskob, as well as John J. Raskob’s funeral. Also discussed are the families views on religion, race, and philanthropy.

Oscar Guttmann (1855-1910) was an explosives engineer and chemist who specialized in fireworks. He worked in a number of explosives works throughout Europe, including Austria, Hungary, Italy, and Switzerland, before establishing himself as a consulting engineer in London with the firm of Oscar Guttmann & Sons, which assisted in the construction of explosives works in the Europe and the United States. During his career he assembled a collection of books and manuscripts on the history of European firearms, explosives and military science. In 1911 his son, Leo Guttmann, sold the collection to Pierre S. du Pont. This collection was acquired by Hagley Library after the 1961 transfer of Longwood Library materials to Hagley Library. The Oscar Guttmann collection on explosives, firearms, and military science consists of 16 manuscript items and includes a Feuerwerkbuch, roughly translated as “fireworks book” dating to 1450, making it the oldest item in Hagley Library's collections. Two items from the collection have not been scanned due to their condition.

The Otis Elevator Company manufactures, installs and maintains elevators, escalators and moving walkways. Elisha Otis (1811-1861) founded the company in 1853 in New York. In 1862, the company began selling elevators internationally, starting in Canada, then expanding to Mexico and Europe as early as 1873. Sales offices were established in London in 1884. The Underground Electric Railways Company of London purchased 140 electric elevators from the company and had them installed between 1905 and 1907. The Otis Elevator Company installation of electric lifts for the London Underground photographs (Accession 1970.176) album contains images of elevators and elevator equipment being installed at subway stations in London. Most of the images show the equipment used to raise, lower and brake the elevator, often already installed at the top of the elevator shaft or in a machine room. Other images feature workers installing or inspecting this equipment. Some photographs feature the completed elevator entrances' in the stations or images of Otis Elevator Company employees.

The PQ Company is a manufacturer of silicate-based industrial chemicals. It was founded in 1831 as the Elkington Company, a Philadelphia candle and soap shop. In the 1840s, the company developed a synthetic detergent using a silicate base. By the end of the century, the firm had expanded and begun manufacturing lye, fertilizers, oils, greases, adhesives, fiber, and wall board. In 1888, the company name was changed to the Philadelphia Quartz Company. The name was changed again in 1973 following the relocation of the corporate headquarters to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. The PQ Corporation photographic collection (Accession 1984.258) has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection is a sample of selected items, largely consisting of images of unidentified employees dating from approximately 1860 to 1940.

Incorporated in 1882 as the Virginia Coal & Iron Company, the Penn Virginia Corporation began as a large south Appalachian coal and land company. From 1902 to 1966, the company was primarily a receiver of dividends, rents, and royalties. The company leased portions of its lands to other coal operators, sold timber, operated sawmills, and maintained a limestone quarry, owned the Interstate Railroad, created Cumberland Water Company, and built the First National Bank of Appalachia. It was renamed Penn Virginia Corporation in 1967. The Penn Virginia Corporation photograph collection (Accession 1993.261) cover a broad range of the company's activities, but has not been digitized in its entirety. This online collection is a curated selection of items dating from approximately the 1890s to the 1930s, and consisting largely of glass plate negatives which depict the McCorkle Lumber Co. and its activities, a limestone quarry, a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, and the Interstate Railroad in Andover, Virginia.

The Pennsylvania Company for Banking and Trusts was a financial services company that was founded by Charles Lipshutz and Maurice L. Wurzel as a railroad and steamship ticket agency. In 1915, the firm shifted to banking and became People's Bank. Both the ticket agency and early bank catered to a client base that, like the company's founders, came from the region's Jewish-American and Jewish immigrant community. Multiple mergers and name changes followed; a 1923 merger with the People’s Trust Company to become People’s Bank and Trust, then a name change to the Colonial Trust Company after a 1927 merger with that company, followed by a 1930 merger with the The Pennsylvania Company for Insurance on Lives and Granting Annuities and a name change to The Pennsylvania Company for Banking and Trusts in 1947. In 1955, a merger with the First National Bank of Philadelphia eventually led to the new name of First Pennsylvania Banking and Trust Co, later abridged to First Pennsylvania Bank. This digital collection consists of annual reports issued by the company between 1947 and 1959.

The Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. is an energy utility and transmission distributer based in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Arising from a business merger, the company was founded on June 4, 1920, and soon after began providing energy to eastern and central Pennsylvania. Renamed PP&L Corporation circa 1995, the company continues to operate as an energy provider within northeastern Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Power & Light Company photographs (Accession 1983.246) collection consists primarily of photographs that depict sites of various PP&L subsidiaries and those directly operated by the company. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection is a selection of sound recordings from the collection; some of these recordings describe power generating plants and infrastructure, while others are records of supervisors' meetings about corporate management and policies.

The Pennsylvania Railroad Company was the largest railroad in the United States in terms of corporate assets and traffic from the last quarter of the nineteenth century until the decline of the northeast's and midwest's dominance of manufacturing. The records in this collection provide nearly comprehensive coverage of corporate matters for the entire time span and reasonably complete coverage of the functional departments from 1920 to 1950, with less coverage from 1893 to 1920 and from 1950 to 1968. This digital collection primarily offers a guide to accessing these records onsite. It also includes some incidentally digitized material from the Pennsylvania Railroad Company records (Accession 1807) collection.

In preparation for its 1946 centennial, the Pennsylvania Railroad Company commissioned the engineering firm of Coverdale & Colpitts to prepare a comprehensive history of the company. The commission involved the creation of two products. The first was this detailed four-volume history of the PRR System as it existed in 1946 for the use of management only. The data collected was subsequently utilized to produce the second product, Centennial History of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company, which was mass distributed. The former work was printed in a limited edition of 100 copies which were strictly controlled and issued only to certain corporate officers, making it an essential but extremely rare source for PRR history. As its title indicates, this is not a narrative history, but rather a statistical compilation which accounts for the construction, financing and corporate succession of every segment of the PRR System to 1946. As very little mileage was added after that date, it practically covers the entire railroad. The volumes are arranged in the form of a chart of corporate succession, with the successor company followed by all of its predecessors in chronological order. This publication is part of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company records (Accession 1807).

The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) was chartered in 1846 to completing an all-rail road across the state. Between 1855 and 1874, the PRR underwent rapid expansion and emerged as one of the two largest railroad systems in the area east of the Mississippi and north of the Ohio. The Pennsylvania Railroad women workers' oral histories (Accession 1998.234) collection consists of two interviews conducted in 1998 in West Chester, Pennsylvania with five women who worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. They describe how they acquired their positions and their experiences working for the company. Topics discussed include wages, uniforms, sexism in the workplace, and the working environment during World War II.

Pew Charitable Trusts is a major philanthropic organization based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Now America's second largest private foundation, Pew has traditionally concentrated their resources in the Philadelphia region, assisting secondary schools, libraries, seminaries and hospitals. In recent years, however, they have adopted a proactive approach to grant-making. They now initiate programs and identify agencies capable of implementing them. In the 1980s, Pew launched two new programs, the Health Policy and the Biomedical Scholar Programs. These initiatives have funded important work in medical education, biochemistry, AIDS research, dentistry, and veterinary medicine. This digital collection represents a small selection of materials from their records in the Hagley Library's Manuscripts and Archives Department.

The Philadelphia Commercial Museum (PCM) was a museum located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its collections were focused on worldwide manufacturing and trade, with an emphasis on domestic and foreign commerce relations. The museum operated from 1897 to 1994 and was also known as the Philadelphia Museums and the Philadelphia Civic Center Museum. Curatorial areas of note include extensive African, Asian, and South American collections, as well as a large ship model collection. PCM also served as a location for conventions and trade shows through the 1990s; it was affiliated with the Port of History Museum in Philadelphia. The bulk of the Philadelphia Commercial Museum records (Accession 2469) material dates from the 1910s to the 1990s. This collection includes photographs, diagrams, object inventories, financial ledgers, board minutes, advertisements, brochures, and trade publications. The collection would be useful to researchers interested in Philadelphia museums and the history of trade and commerce. The collection has not been digitized in it's entirety.

The Main Line of the Pennsylvania Railroad was a rail line connecting Philadelphia with Pittsburgh via Harrisburg. It is still an important cross-state corridor, composed of Amtrak's Philadelphia to Harrisburg Main Line, SEPTA's Paoli/Thorndale Line and the Norfolk Southern Railway's Pittsburgh Line. The Philadelphia Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, Main Line bridge photographs (Accession 2012.237) collection consists of photographs of thirty-nine bridges on the Philadelphia Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which ran from Philadelphia to Harrisburg. The photographs were taken by or for the company as a form of property documentation. The photographs show the Main Line suburbs before they were built up when the roads and streets were much more rudimentary. The original photographs were digitized and the scans donated to Hagley Museum and Library by Stephen J. Agostini, a former employee of Conrail and webmaster for the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical and Historical Society.

Philadelphia Saving Fund Society (PSFS), the nation's first mutual savings bank, was founded in 1816. In 1927 the Society commissioned Howe and Lescaze, a local architectural firm that had previously designed traditional style banks for the institution, to draw up plans for a new building to be constructed at the corner of 12th and Market Streets. The Philadelphia Saving Fund Society (PSFS) photographs (Accession 1993.302) collection is composed of materials from two Philadelphia mutual savings banks which date from the first half of the nineteenth century. The collection has been divided into two series: Philadelphia Saving Fund Society (PSFS) and Western Savings Fund Society (WSFS) which was merged with PSFS in 1982. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection offers a small selection of materials from the collection associated with the construction of the PSFS building at 12th and Market Streets; images of the building's design, construction, and interiors, along with articles and promotional materials about the building.

The Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company was the country's largest producer of anthracite coal from 1871 through the 1920s. At one time it controlled over 40 per cent of the country's anthracite reserves and owned the world's largest anthracite breaker. The Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company photographs (Accession 1980,318) collection consists of two volumes of photographs that portray in detail the process of mining and processing anthracite coal. The first concerns the mine interiors, miners, and their machinery. The second covers the coal once it reaches the breaker. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This selection of material primarily shows the company's operation in Locust Summit near Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania, and comprises 86 photographs that detail the steps of mining and processing anthracite coal.

The Philadelphia railroad stations, Red Arrow Lines trolley track and bus photographs (Accession 1995.238) collection documents some of the activities of the various public and private transportation agencies that were active in Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs in the years between 1927 and 1965. These include the Pennsylvania Railroad (1846-1968), the Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company (1936-1970), the Passenger Service Improvement Corporation (1960-1965), the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Compact (1961-1965), and the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority, or SEPTA (1963- ). The majority of this small collections consists of photographic materials depicting transportation centers, buses and trains, and other mass transit infrastructure, including Philadelphia's Suburban Station, 30th Street Station, and the Penn Center complex. Other photographs document promotional activities conducted by transit agencies. There is also an undated rental brochure for the Fidelity-Philadelphia Trust Building and promotional material from the Laclede Steel Company.

Incorporated in 1884, the Phoenix Bridge Company specialized in railroad bridges, both long-span truss bridges and movable bridges of the swing, bascule and vertical lift type. The company also produced and erected structural iron and steel work. In the early 20th century, Phoenix built a number of very large bridges, the most notorious of which was the Quebec Bridge over the St. Lawrence (1900-1907). The company declined during and after World War II; the works closed in June 1949 and the company became a Barium Steel Corporation subsidiary until being shut down entirely in 1962. The Phoenix Bridge Company photographs (Accession 1971.916) collection is largely composed of 20th century photoprints of bridges and construction projects. There are numerous photographs of railroad bridges and of highway bridges, which composed the majority of the company's work in its last decades. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

Pierre A. Gentieu (1842-1930) was a long-time employee of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company. He began working for DuPont in 1877 and remained a loyal employee until his retirement in 1911. Drawing and photography were among Gentieu’s favorite pastimes. The du Pont’s allowed Gentieu to photograph the DuPont Co. plant, property, family members, and their homes, creating an invaluable photographic record of the company's Brandywine Mills at the turn of the century. The images in the Pierre A. Gentieu Brandywine River Valley photographs (Accession 1970.001) collection include the DuPont Powder Yards on Brandywine Creek and other company buildings on that site, du Pont Family homes (including Windmar, Rokeby, Pelleport, Swamp Hall, and Eleutherian Mills, which was converted to a workers' club during Gentieu's years of employment), DuPont Company workers and their homes and families, Delaware School Districts twenty-three and seventy-five, Wilmington-area churches (including Mt. Salem and St. Joseph's), and probably the only extant images of the aftermath of late nineteenth century black powder explosions on the Brandywine.

Pierre A. Gentieu (1842-1930) was a long-term employee of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company who created an invaluable photographic record of the company's Brandywine Mills at the turn of the century. He was born in southwestern France in 1842, and emigrated to the United States around 1859. Gentieu began work in the Hagley Powder Yard in June, 1877. In 1881, he was appointed yard clerk by Francis Gurney du Pont, who took Gentieu with him when he established the smokeless powder plant at Carney's Point, N.J. in 1890. Gentieu also developed an amateur interest in photography, and between 1889 and 1910 he produced several hundred views of the Hagley Yards and their immediate surroundings. He was serving as the company's chief storekeeper at his retirement in 1925. The Pierre Gentieu papers (Accession 0503) collection offers correspondence with du Pont family members and coworkers, an account book of powder packed at the Hagley Yard (1858-1902); a record book with lists of explosions (1882-1909); time work sheets of powdermen during the 1890s; and a list of the principal events in the powder yards from 1882 to 1911. This document describes the work process to manufacture black powder at Hagley and several accidents that took place during this period.

The Plymouth Cordage Company of North Plymouth, Massachusetts, was founded in 1824 by Bourne Spooner (1790-1870), an ardent abolitionist whose commitment to free labor ideology led the company to implement generous employee benefits and facilities for its workers. By the late 19th century, the company had become a major international manufacturer of rope and twine. Its products were in heavy use within shipping and fishing industries, though its binder twine was also in widespread use on farms. After serving as the largest employer in Plymouth for over 100 years, the company went out of business in 1964. Its assets were purchased by the Columbian Rope Company in 1965. The Plymouth Cordage Company album (Accession 1982.231) documents the company's operations in the years around 1900. It contains sixteen photographs of plant interiors showing machinery and manufacturing processes, and two exterior views of the building.

Hagley Library's Postcards of motels, roadside attractions, restaurants, etc. in the United States (Accession 2007.214) collection comprises 130 postcards dating from approximately 1930 to 1960. The postcards depict motels (including motor courts and cabins), restaurants, roadside attractions, and scenic views from thirty-ones states across the United States. The postcards depict famous and notable destinations like Hollywood Boulevard and the Lincoln Memorial as well as well as regional attractions and small tourism-based businesses.

This collection features nearly 500 aerial photographs of the Brandywine valley taken in 1970 in a project conceived and sponsored by Ellice and Rosa McDonald. A project dedication states that the photographs are "for all of the people who have lived or worked on the Brandywine and for those who have loved it." These images feature aerial views of Brandywine River valley locations in southeastern Pennsylvania and Delaware including factories, cities and towns, historical sites, natural landmarks, bridges, neighborhoods, and other places of importance.

Between 1936 and 1986, the Committee published over two hundred pamphlets on topics ranging from industrial policy, war and society, medical science, income distribution, consumer protection, economic policy, gender inequality, the social sciences, and more. While its approach to these topics sometimes led to accusations of socialist or un-American sympathies, its most controversial publications addressed race relations, particularly ‘The Races of Mankind’ (1946), which was banned from use in the U.S. Army for its rejection of biological theories about racial hierarchy.

The Pusey & Jones Corporation built ships and machinery in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1848, Joshua L. Pusey (1820-1891) and John Jones (1818-1897) formed the partnership of Pusey & Jones, with machine shops and a factory for the building of engines. In its initial operations, the firm built general machinery and steam engines and did a variety of repair work. In 1853, it entered the field of shipbuilding. In 1867, the firm expanded into the manufacture of papermaking machinery; by the 1890s the company was one of the largest manufacturers of such machinery in the world. This digital collection includes more than 2,100 of the approximately 6,700 images in the Pusey & Jones photograph collection; it has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Radio Corporation of America was incorporated in Delaware on October 17, 1919, and changed its name to RCA Corporation on May 9, 1969. For over fifty years it was one of the country’s leading manufacturers and vendors of radios, phonographs, televisions, and a wide array of consumer and military electronics products. The RCA Victor Camden/Frederick O. Barnum III records (Accession 2069) collection consists of three series: Secretary's files; B.L. Aldridge files; and the Camden Technical Library files. The collection is largely RCA technical reports, standards, engineering notebooks, manuals and miscellaneous publications. These records were salvaged by company historian Frederick O. Barnum III from the RCA Camden Plant's photo lab after the plant had been vacated by successor company Martin Marietta Corporation in April 1993. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

The Victor Talking Machine Company was a Camden, New Jersey company founded in 1901 by Eldridge Reeves Johnson (1867-1945), a former machinist for the Berliner Gramophone Company. It quickly became a leading U.S. manufacturer of phonographs and phonograph records by many of the leading musical artists of the day.. In 1926, Johnson sold controlling interests in the company to a banking firm, who, in 1929, sold the company to the Radio Corporation of America. Successive name and management changes would include the Radio-Victor Division of the Radio Corporation of America, the RCA Manufacturing Company, the RCA Victor Division and, in 1968, RCA Records. The records in the Radio Corporation of America, RCA Victor Division secretary's records (Accession 2658) collection come from the Camden administration building. There are ten volumes of corporation committee minutes dating from 1912 to 1931, which cover a wide range of corporate activities. Additional volumes consist of reports from the President to the Board of Directors and production contracts from 1945-1946.

While postcards were in existence as early as 1840, postcard collecting became popular in the early twentieth century. It was an accessible and inexpensive hobby, as postcards were plentiful. Collectors of railroad memorabilia often also collected postcards. Railroad postcards generally picture stations, engines, bridges, route scenery, railcar interiors, and accidents. Some collectors sought specific railroads. The Railroad postcards collection (Accession 1995.299) is an artificial collection assembled from a variety of donors and contains over a thousand postcards related to railroads. It has not been digitized in its entirety. Most of the postcards from this collection date from 1900 to 1940 and depict railroad station exteriors, although some show waiting rooms, lobbies, or terminals. Many of the postcards identify the railroads serving the station depicted as well as the station itself.

This collection consists of four films showing a selection of motion and time studies that were managed or designed by Ralph Mosser Barnes (1900-1984). These experiments measured and rated an employee's efficiency while performing a repetitive task. After the study was complete, recommendations were made to management staff on what could be improved to increase productivity, such as employee body movement or position, equipment design, or time allowances. The Ralph Mosser Barnes motion and time study films (Accession 2022.203) collection consists of four films showing a selection of studies that were managed or designed by Barnes. Three films are specific studies that Barnes conducted in 1949 showing people performing various tasks at different speeds. The fourth film, The Ratings of Time Studies, shows the machine operator performance of three manufacturing jobs: forming rug cups, cutting cork tube, and deburring.

Ralph S. Yourison (1898-1988) worked as the Power Consultant at E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company's Spruance Plant in Richmond, Virginia, from the 1940s through the early 1960s. The Spruance Plant had been in operation since 1927, when it was established to produce rayon. In 1935, it was renamed the Spruance Plant in honor of rayon pioneer and Dupont executive, William C. Spruance. Over the decades, it continued to expand. By the 1950s and 1960s, it was producing cellophane as well as new products such as Tyvek, Nomex, and Teflon. During this time, Yourison was named the Spruance Plant's Power Consultant, largely spearheading an effort to reduce energy use through the evaluation of coal by utilization cost. His efforts led to the modernization of the plant's power facilities. Yourison retired from the Dupont Company on March 31, 1963. The Ralph Yourison Dupont Company retirement scrapbook (Accession 2729) contains photographs of the Spruance Plant, Yourison, and other employees. It also includes congratulatory retirement letters, a program outline, and a list of attendees for Yourison's retirement party, as well as a signature list of friends, acquaintances, and coworkers.

Raymond Loewy (1893–1986) was a French-born American industrial designer that became one of the most well know industrial designers during the middle decades of the 20th century. His work included logos and packaging design for major corporations like Exxon, Coca-Cola, and Lucky Strike, as well as product design for corporations like Studebaker and International Harvester, and the redesign of Air Force One for the John F. Kennedy administration. This digital collection offers selections from two physical collections at Hagley Library. The Raymond Loewy archive (Accession 2251) contains personal papers, business records, and materials generated and maintained by Loewy's New York Public Relations Department. The Raymond Loewy collection of photographs and audiovisual materials (Accession 2004.255) contains images of design work Loewy and his firm conducted for corporate American and foreign clients, Loewy's personal photographs, and his speeches and interviews.

Chartered in 1871, Reading Company was the holding company for the system of railroads, canals and coal mines assembled by the predecessor Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Company between 1833 and 1896. The Reading Company records (Accession 1520) collection consists of the corporate records of the Reading Company (1871-1976), the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Company (1833-1896), the Philadelphia & Reading Railway Company (1896-1923), and 159 predecessors and subsidiaries. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. The materials here are a selection of records generated by Pinkerton detectives employed by Franklin B. Gowen, president of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad, on three different missions. This includes the Molly Maguire materials in Hagley Library’s collection of Reading Company records (with the exception of 8 volumes of stenographic reports of trial proceedings)

Red Arrow Lines was a division of the Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company, a company formed in 1936 by the merger of two transportation companies, the Philadelphia & West Chester Traction Company and the Philadelphia & Garrettford Street Railway Company, both owned by Merritt H. Taylor, Jr. (1922-2010). Over the 1960s, Taylor's unwillingness to allow the company to join competing companies in public-private regional transportation compacts that consolidated services or accepted public regulation in exchange for public subsidies and other benefits led to increased expenses, revenue losses, and reduced ridership. In 1970, the Red Arrow division was sold to the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). The Red Arrow Lines photographs (Accession 1972.438) collection contains photographs dating from 1899 to 1970 that document transit vehicles, infrastructure, and routes for the Red Arrow Lines and its predecessor transit lines. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

Chartered in 1869, the Wilmington & Western Rail Road Company formed to create a rail line connecting Wilmington, Delaware, with Landenberg, Pennsylvania. Over time, however, its footprint shrank. Passenger service was discontinued in 1930, and the company abandoned much of its track in the 1940s and 1950s. A non-profit organization, Historic Red Clay Valley, Inc. (HRCV)., formed in 1960 and today operates the line as a heritage railroad. The Robert E. Wilhelm, Jr. collection of Red Clay Valley materials (Accession 2017.238) includes digital access copies of eight valuation maps created by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) in 1918 for the Wilmington & Western Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, Landenberg Branch. The V-8.3 sheets cover the railroad from the Delaware-Pennsylvania state line to Landenberg, Pennsylvania. The V-9.4 sheets cover the railroad from the west end of Wilsmere Yard (Route 141) to the Delaware-Pennsylvania state line. Also included in the collection are two publications authored or edited by Robert E. Wilhelm, Jr., concerning the history of both the Wilmington & Western Railroad line and Historic Red Clay Valley, Inc. (HRCV). Wilhelm was been a member of Historic Red Clay Valley Inc. since the mid-1980s, serving at times as a board member and as the organization's Director of Administration.

The Robert K. Austin picture file on the history of the automobile in America (Accession 1979.262) This collection consists of a picture reference file of American automobiles built between 1877 and 1979. Most pictures are illustrations clipped from magazines and other publications, but there are also some postcards, photographs, and ephemera items. More than 300 American auto-makers are represented in the collection, with particularly good coverage of early automobiles manufactured in the first decades of the twentieth century. The collection is arranged alphabetically by auto-maker; most files contain only one or two images of a single car model, though the files of larger firms such as Ford and Pontiac contain dozens of images of many different vehicle models. Some files contain brief company histories, presumably researched and written by Robert K. Austin. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Company was founded in 1844 by Samuel Stockton White (1822-1879), a dentist from Philadelphia. By the 1850s, the company was one of the world’s leading manufacturers of false teeth and dental appliances, with sales offices and representatives operating across the globe. Over the course of the 20th century, the company continued to expand. A subsidiary division was founded to apply its patented flexible shaft technology to clients in aircraft, automotive, and other industrial markets. The S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Company merged with Pennwalt Corporation in 1968. Following this purchase, the company was restructured, first as the S.S. White Industrial Division in 1972, then to S.S. White Technologies, Inc. in 1988. The S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Company photographs (Accession 1972.244) collection has not been digitized in its entirety. Many of the photographs of company personnel, company buildings, corporate events, dental equipment, dental offices and schools in the United States and abroad, and trade shows and exhibitions have been reproduced here. The collection also includes many portraits of identified and unidentified dentists, as well as other unidentified locations, most of which have been excluded from digitization.

The Hanford Engineer Works in Hanford, Washington, was constructed between 1943 and 1945 to create the plutonium 239 and uranium 235 used in the atomic weapons needed for World War II. The construction and operation of the facility was sponsored by the Army Corps of Engineers, but E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company acted as the prime contractor tasked with constructing and running the Works. During the war, the Hanford Engineer Works employed about 51,000 people worked at the site. Many lived in Richland, a government town established nearby specifically to house employees of the project. In 1946, with the conclusion of World War II, the Hanford Engineer Works was removed from military control, though plutonium production periodically continued, with General Electric replacing DuPont as the primary contractor. The Sage Sentinel was the weekly publication for employees of the Hanford Engineer Works. It contained coverage of work at Hanford, news about World War II, human interest stories, news about upcoming and recent company-sponsored social events, and classified ads for area businesses.

The Saul Zalesch follection of American ephemera is a collection of over trade catalogs, cookbooks, and other printed ephemera from the late 1870s through the 1940s originally collected by Saul Zalesch, an art historian that became interested in the genre while working as a research fellow at Winterthur Library in the 1990s. Zalesch's collection is split between Winterthur and Hagley. Winterthur, whose collections focus on America's artistic, cultural, social, and intellectual history, retained items from the collection concerning the decorative arts. Hagley received the items concerning business history. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. By Zalesch’s request, no fees are charged to scholars for the publication of images from his collection.

The Bronfman family of Canada acquired the Joseph E. Seagram & Sons Co. of Waterloo, Ontario, in 1927. By the 1950s, Seagram was one of the world's largest alcoholic beverage firms. "The Seagram Spotlight" photographs (Accession 1996.310) collection is composed of photographs used as illustrations in The Seagram Spotlight, a monthly magazine published by the staff of Seagram Distiller's Corporation and which targeted Seagram's national salesforce and Seagram distributors. The magazine targeted Seagram's national salesforce and Seagram distributors who were collectively addressed as "Seagramerica." The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. The materials here are a small selection of images from the collection depicting the design and construction of the Seagram Building in New York City. Some of the images feature the building's architects, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Phyllis Lambert, and Philip Johnson.

Selby, Battersby and Co. was once one of the nation's leading manufacturers and installers of marine decking and industrial flooring. The company was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by George W. Selby (1886-1967) and Edward Battersby (c.1887-1959). In 1978, the company became a subsidiary of Quaker Chemical Corporation; its name was later changed to SB Decking, Inc. The Selby, Battersby and Co. employees photographs (Accession 2008.202) collection documents a celebration held on the occasion of receiving the U.S. Maritime Commission's "M" award for production excellence. The award was bestowed for the company's work in supplying and installing deck flooring for over 400 merchant marine vessels during World War II. The company was the first firm in Philadelphia to receive this honor. The photographs in the collection show the "M" pennant and labor merit badges awarded to all employees of the company. This is a digital-only collection that was provided to the library on a loan for copy basis, and has been included in its entirety.

Sewing Machine Times was a bi-monthly trade journal published from 1882 to 1924, during the height of sewing machine manufacturing. The journal provided space for sewing manufacturers, retailers, marketers, and other related professionals to discuss changes and advancements in home and factory sewing machines. A typical issue of the journal contained news stories and articles about about new products, employment notices, advertisements for sewing machines and related home goods, and descriptions of sewing machine retail locations. Hagley Library's holdings of the publication are call number f TJ1501 .S4956 in our collections. The collection comprises seventeen volumes spanning 1891 to 1911, and does not include the entire run of the journal.

Before the rise of phonographs and radio, publishers of sheet music dominated the American music industry. The biggest music publishing houses were those of ‘Tin Pan Alley’ in New York City. But throughout the United States, publishing houses, lyricists, arrangers, and composers, often working in partnership with local musical instrument stores, emerged to serve both national and regional consumers. As the American middle class grew during the mid-19th century, musical instruments and the ability to play them (and pianos in particular), became widespread signifiers of respectable middle-class status, and publishers responded to meet this emerging market. By the early 20th century, however, as phonographs became more commercially popular, sheet music was replaced by recorded music. This decline was further hastened by the public’s embrace of radio within the home in the years after 1920. The scores assembled here have been drawn from a variety of collections within the Hagley Library. New items may be added as they are scanned.

Shell was formed in 1907 through the merger of Royal Dutch Petroleum Company of the Netherlands and The "Shell" Transport and Trading Company of the United Kingdom. Over the years, it has grown to become a vertically integrated and is active in every area of the oil and gas industry, with operations in nearly 100 nations. The company began issuing stainability reports about its environmental performance in 1997. The reports contain information about the company's activities in worker and public safety, environmental impact and sustainability, impact on communities, shareholder reports, and other similar performance data. Hagley Library's collection of sustainability reports from Shell are digital-only copies and date from 1998 to 2020

<ol>Simon Bolivar Camacho (1859-1906) was a traveling sales representative for the American Bank Note Company, a dominant American producer of bank notes, stock and bond certificates and similar commercial paper. The Simon B. Camacho papers (Accession 2704) collection includes his diaries between 1892 and 1904. Included with the diaries are typed transcripts made by his grandson. Additionally there are loose papers of both Camacho and his father, Simon Pablo Camacho y Clemente (1824-1883). Camacho's diaries record his business travels in Latin America, but also contain information on daily events in the New York City area, and news of the day. The entries also record domestic, personal and religious reflections, particularly regarding 1903 death of his wife from pneumonia while he was traveling in the Mediterranean.

The Sperry Corporation was an electronics company; its UNIVAC Division manufactured the first commercial digital computer. The Sperry UNIVAC division had its origins in the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation (EMCC), founded in 1946 by J. Presper Eckert (1919-1995) and John W. Mauchly (1907-1980). In 1950, Eckert and Mauchly sold their firm to Remington Rand, Inc, a major manufacturer of business machines, who continued development of the UNIVAC system. In 1955, Remington Rand merged with the Sperry Corporation, and the UNIVAC Division was retained as part of the newly formed Sperry Rand Corporation. The Sperry Corporation, UNIVAC Division photographs and audiovisual materials (Accession 1985.261) collection documents predecessor organizations to the Sperry Corporation. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. The materials here are a selection from the collection, and primarily include product images of computers from the 1950s to 1970s.

‘Sponsored film’ defines a variety of motion picture productions funded by businesses, organizations, or governments that dictated the point of view, audience, and intent of the film. Industrial or business films are a sub-genre of sponsored films with content that marketed products and ideas, touted a particular company or industry, trained employees, and explained manufacturing or transactional processes around the creation and sales of products and ideas. The Sponsored and industrial motion picture film collection (Accession 2018.222) at Hagley is an artificial collection compiled by curators that includes single motion picture films or small sets of films acquired via purchase or donation. The collection is comprised of sponsored films produced for businesses (industrial films) and those produced for organizations promoting business interests. Additionally, it contains educational films with the intent to teach consumerism, energy production, career training, and similar topics with a pro-business message. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety.

Stephanie Louise Kwolek (1923-2014) was an American chemist best known for her role in inventing Kevlar. Kwolek began her career in 1946. After graduating from what is now Carnegie-Mellon University with a B.S. in Chemistry, she was hired as a research chemist at DuPont's textile fabrics laboratory in Buffalo, New York. Six years later, she transferred to Wilmington, Delaware to work in the newly launched Pioneering Research Laboratory. Kwolek has been named on a total of twenty-eight patents and won a number of awards for her work, including the National Medal of Technology and Perkin Medal. Kwolek was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1995 and the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2003. The Stephanie Kwolek photographs and videotapes (Accession 2014.248) collection contains photographs, albums, press clippings, slide,s and videotapes related to Kwolek's career and achievements, including her work on Kevlar. It has not been digitized in its entirety.

Longwood Gardens is a series of formal display gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, that was developed by Pierre S. "P.S." du Pont (1870-1954) after he purchased the site from the Peirce family in 1906. The Peirce family had received this 1,000-acre site as part of a land grant by William Penn (1644-1718). Interested in horticulture, they ornamented the land with trees and plants that were not native to this area. P.S. du Pont and his wife, Alice Beliln du Pont, built a series of formal gardens with fountains on the site. They opened the garden to the public in 1921. In 1937, P.S. created the Longwood Foundation. When P.S. du Pont died in 1954, the property was transferred to the Foundation to operate as a public garden. The Stereo photographs of Longwood Gardens (Accession 1984.246) collection consists of 103 autochrome color glass stereo photographs. The images, dating to circa 1922, depict interiors and exteriors of the garden, conservatory, and residence. The collection has been largely digitized, but has not been digitized in its entirety.

Strawbridge & Clothier was a major department store chain in the Greater Philadelphia area focused on a middle-class clientele. The firm was founded as a partnership by Justus C. Strawbridge and Isaac H. Clothier on July 1, 1868, and incorporated on February 14, 1922. The firm was operated on Quaker principles of simplicity and community service, control remaining with the founding families, especially the Strawbridges, for four generaltions. The company was the last locally-​controlled, family-owned department store chain in the Philadelphia area. Despite an early move into suburban branches beginning in 1930 and the development of the popular Clover line of discount stores, the firm succumbed to changing patterns in retailing and sold its stores to the May Department Store Company of St. Louis on July 15, 1996. <ol>This digital collection draws from multiple resources at Hagley Library. Store Chat was the employee magazine of Strawbridge & Clothier, a department store founded by Justus C. Strawbridge (1838-1911) and Isaac H. Clothier (1837-1921) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The magazine published communications from management, news about workers' lives, reports on company and company-sponsored activities, instructions to employees about fashion trends and consumer preferences, and light commentary on matters of local and national import. As the operation grew into a major regional retail chain, the magazine added dispatches from suburban branch stores. Store Chat was first published in June 1906 and was released at irregular intervals until 1909. After 1909, it maintained a more regular publication schedule, though it did not operate continuously, and ceased publication entirely in the early 1930s during the Great Depression. After it resumed publication in 1943, it ran continuously and on a monthly to bimonthly basis until 1996, when the Strawbridge & Clothier's was purchased by May Department Stores Company. The library's holdings of Store Chat are incomplete, but span its entire run of publication.

The California Associated Raisin Company was established in 1912 as a cooperative business that serviced as a packing house for participating raisin growers, where raisins could be stored, processed, packed, and shipped from a centralized location. In 1915, the brand name Sun-Maid, coined by advertising executive E.A. Berg, was launched. The branding proved popular, and in 1922, the company changed its name to the Sun-Maid Growers of California to more closely identify with the popular brand. Soon after, owner-members comprised nearly 85 percent of the state’s raisin growers. The Sun-Maid Raisin Maidens photographs (Accession 2010.208) collection of six photographs depicts women costumed as the Sun-Maid Raisin Maiden at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco, California. The group includes Lorraine Collet Peterson, the original model for the "Sun-Maid Girl" logo. Photographs show the women at various locations around the Exposition, including the California Associated Raisin Company exhibit.

The Taylor-Wharton Iron & Steel Company, incorporated in 1912 at what is now High Bridge, New Jersey, produced frogs, switches and other railroad fittings as well as ordnance during both World Wars. The company added the manufacture of dredge buckets after acquiring an interest in the Yuba Manufacturing Company of California in 1933. The Taylor-Wharton Iron and Steel Company photographs and films (Accession 1971.530) collection contains photographs dating from 1870 to 1965 which are primarily of products such as dredging equipment, railroad tracks, rollers, crushers, and buckets. It also contains films of dredge buckets in operation in the United States and at international locations. It has not been digitized in its entirety. The films presented here date from the mid 1930s to the early 1940s, and contain imagery of Taylor-Wharton dredge buckets and other equipment associated with the company. These films were shot in California and Alaska, as well as internationally in Southeast Asia, Australia, and Colombia. Many of these films include landscape scenery, aerial footage, and scenes of indigenous people, animals, and cities. There is also an instructional film on sliding and base running in baseball.

The Mill at Anselma oral history interviews (Accession 2019.226) collection contains eight interviews conducted in 1982, 1986, and 2001 with individuals familiar with the Mill at Anselma, a custom grain mill in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Most interviewees are part of the Collins family (the last residents of the mill), as well as other Chester County locals. Members of the Collins family interviewed include: Horace Collins, Mary Collins Griffith, and John Collins. Ada Gordon and Elmer Matthews are also interviewed. The discussions mainly focus on the mill, how it operated, and its service to the county, but also include numerous personal stories recounting life in early twentieth century rural Pennsylvania. The Pickering Valley Railroad and its station at Anselma is discussed, as well. This project was spearheaded by Dr. John James Turner, Jr. and the French and Pickering Creek Conservation Trust.

Elwood Marshall, and Franklin Ewart. They purchased the former Garrett paper mill in Yorklyn, renaming it the Marshall Brothers Paper Mill. In 1897, Israel built a Victorian mansion, now known as Auburn Heights, on a hill overlooking the paper mill. This mansion has remained in the family to the present time, belonging first to Israel’s son, T. (Thomas) Clarence Marshall, and later to his son, Thomas C. Marshall, Jr. The images presented here represent more than 1,000 of the approximately 1,100 images from the Thomas C. Marshall photographs (Accession 1990.270) collection. They largely feature Marshall family members, friends, and employees. The collection also includes images of T. Clarence Marshall's collection of Stanley Steamer automobiles, the Marshall Brothers Paper Mill, Auburn Heights, and buildings and landscapes near Yorklyn, Delaware and neighboring Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Thomas Lamb (1896-1988) was a industrial designer most noted for his design of physiologically efficient handles. His papers contain drawings, sketches, and artifacts pertaining to Lamb's career, which trace the development of his unique handle design, as well as his pursuits in the fields of textiles, cartoons, and writing, particularly for children. The physical collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection focuses especially on materials documenting Lamb's work in the field of universal design, a branch of industrial design whose principles prioritize accessibility for all people, regardless of age and ability, in product and environment creation.

Tom Moser began a handmade furniture company with his wife, Mary, operating as business manager in 1972 at an old Grange Hall in New Gloucester, Maine. A former college professor, Moser's early designs were heavily influenced by the American decorative art traditions of the Shaker and Pennsylvania German communities, as well as by the Queen Anne style. In 1987, the company moved to a workshop in Auburn, Maine, which has since grown to more that 90,000 square feet while employing nearly 70 skilled craftsmen. The company utilizes North American hardwoods, and Moser's designs continue to take inspiration from traditional forms with a focus on craftsmanship. The Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers records (Accession 2809) collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection features a selection of catalogs, promotional videos, showroom binders, photographs, and design sketchbooks from the collection.

The first use of air mail in the United States occurred in September, 1911 from Garden City, New York to Mineola, New York. Other experimental airmail flights followed. In 1918, Congress appropriated funds to set up an experimental air mail route between New York City and Washington, D.C., with a stopover in Philadelphia. Although initially operated with the cooperation of the War Department, the Post Office Department assumed full control of this service later that year. Congress passed the Kelly Air Mail Act in 1925, which got the government out of the air mail business and required private carriers to bid on Contract Air Mail (CAM) routes set up by the Post Office. The United States Air Mail Service photographs (Accession 1982.328) collection consists of photographs taken during the first years of the United States Post Office Department air mail service. Many of these photographs are portraits of individual air mail service pilots. Airplanes used by the Air Mail Service and photographs taken in 1911 on the occasion of the first official air mail flight appear in many of the images. It has not been digitized in its entirety

The Vulcan Iron Works was founded in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1849 to produce specialty iron products for the local coal industry. This grew to machinery, as well, mostly for use in coal mining operations. The collapse of the anthracite industry in the 1930s destroyed a large part of the company's market, though production continued into the mid-1950s. In 1888, Vulcan acquired the Wyoming Valley Manufacturing Company, makers of locomotives. This soon became a major part of Vulcan's activities. As heavy trucks gradually replaced locomotives, however, Vulcan’s locomotive production also declined, finally ending in May 1949 Most of the 11,400 item Vulcan Iron Works negatives (Accession 1971.210) collection consist of original glass and film negatives dating from about the 1880s to 1943, mostly images of locomotives and mining or manufacturing equipment. Selections from these negatives make up the entirety of this digital collection.

William C. Spruance, Jr., was an electrical engineer, a company executive on the board of directors of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company, and a civic leader in Wilmington, Delaware. Spruance was also an amateur photographer and used these skills to photograph the gardens of his wife, Alice Moore Lea Spruance, as well as gardens of other wealthy residents of New Castle County between 1920 and 1925. The W. C. Spruance lantern slides (Accession 1984.217) collection contains estate or private gardens in New Castle County; slides with images from trips to Puerto Rico, Florida, and New Brunswick, Canada; and a small group of images relating to nitroglycerine and dynamite manufacture. Many of the images are either hand colored lantern slides or color Lumiere Autochrome lantern slides. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. Most of the images selected for digitization and presented here were created between 1920 and 1925 and show estate and private gardens in and around Wilmington, Delaware.

The collection consists of Christmas and other holiday postcards, including New Year's, birthday, 4th of July, Halloween, Washington's Birthday, Decoration Day, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, and Easter postcards. The 556 items in this collection date from ca. 1900 to 1950, with the bulk of items dating from 1905 to 1930. This collection was donated to the Hagley Library in 1973 by Maxine Maxson Waldron (1898-1982), an artist and educator once employed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in its department of education, by various private schools as an art teacher, and as a ceramics specialist at the Greenwich House Pottery Shop. After her marriage to William R. Waldron, an employee at Du Pont's Chambers Works, she pursued her interests in art, fashion, and interior decoration through her activities as a collector This collection has not been digitized in its entirety. A small number of incomplete postcards were omitted from scanning, as were a small number of duplicative negative film images and photographic reproductions.

Ward and Gow, a New York advertising agency, is credited as one of the first firms to "systematize" advertising in the New York subway and elevated marketplace. Their office address was listed as 1 Union Square, New York on the cover of the album. The Ward and Gow elevated railway and subway advertising album (Accession 1995.246) contains fifteen photographs documenting advertising on New York City elevated train platforms and on subway cars. The location of each photograph is given in the lower right side of the image. Since many of the advertisements are for theater or vaudeville shows for which Ward and Gow also did advertising, it is possible to date some of these images within a month's time. Most of the images are devoid of people.

The Warren-Ehret Company was a forerunner in the composite roofing industry, formed in 1883 in Philadelphia and incorporated in 1887. This digital collection consists of 179 images selected from three unbound albums (circa 1900) in the Warren-Ehret Company photograph albums (Accession 2002.251) collection. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety. The albums were used as sales portfolios to show the variety and extent of Warren-Ehret's roofing jobs on a variety of buildings. The buildings are predominately industrial structures, but the collection also includes offices, stores, apartments and private homes. The collection covers buildings in the greater Philadelphia area and the surrounding areas of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York City, and Connecticut.

Wawa is an American chain of convenience stores and gas stations located in the Middle Atlantic States and Florida, well-known for their made-to-order hoagies. Formed in 1968 through the merger of two antecedent family businesses, the Millville Manufacturing Company and Wawa Dairy Farms, the firm adopted its current name in 1974. The collection largely consists of photographs of buildings, processes, machinery, and employees from the Wawa Corporation, including the Millville Manufacturing Company, the Wawa Dairy Farms, the Wawa Food Market, and several portraits of Wood family members. The Westinghouse Machine Company began in 1880 and manufactured gas and steam engines, turbines and mechanical stokers. The company's Steam Division had plants located in Lester and Essington in southeastern Pennsylvania. They were known as the "South Philadelphia Works". The Westinghouse Electric Corporation Steam Division photographs (Accession 1969.170) collection offers a vast corporate photographic archive covering diverse topics including technical subjects showing machines and machine parts. The Essington property in particular is thoroughly documented. There are many identified and dated photographs of employees. Some of artistic merit and historical importance are the work of Charles Yessel, company photographer. The collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection features over 1,000 photographs from the collection dating from 1898 to 1964. These photographs cover a variety of subjects including building construction, turbine manufacturing, research facilities, machinery, executives and employees, and visitors to the facility.

The Westinghouse Machine Company began in 1880, and the company's first contract to build a turbine dates to 1896. In 1945, the company's name was changed to Westinghouse Electric Corporation. The Westinghouse Machine Company album (Accession 1983.247) contains a variety of images of products and facilities related to the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company. These include photographs of equipment such as boilers, generators, mechanical stokers, pumping machinery and turbines. Most of this equipment is shown already installed in assorted power plants. Images showing electric locomotives and trains using air breaks designed by Westinghouse are also featured. Facilities featured include an aerial photograph of the Westinghouse works at East Pittsburgh and a view of the meter testing department at the Newark, New Jersey works. Employees appear incidentally in several of these photographs.

The Westmoreland Coal Company is the oldest independent bituminous coal producer in the United States and usually ranks among the top twenty producers in terms of output and sales. The present Westmoreland Coal Co. is an amalgamation of several previous firms. The Westmoreland Coal Company photographs and videos (Accession 1993.233) collection contains a broad range of materials dating from 1876 to 1983 that includes records from both the Westmoreland Coal Co. and from the firms it absorbed. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety. This digital collection primarily comprises photographs dating from 1915 to 1960, and are mostly of the Stonega Coke and Coal Company mine and hospital at Stonega, Virginia as well as images related to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company .

In 1809, the textile manufacturer Henry Whitaker (1763-1849) relocated his firm of Whitaker & Sons in England to New York. In 1813, he relocated again, this time to Cedar Grove, Pennsylvania, along the Tacony branch of the Frankford Creek. There, he founded Cedar Grove Mills, one of the region’s earliest textile mills. After 1822, the business was run by his nephew, William Whitaker (1813-1878), who operated it as William Whitaker & Sons. From the 1840s until World War II, the mills specialized in mattress ticking. In 1876, it purchased the nearby Tremont Carpet Mills and expanded into carpet manufacture. After World War II, the firm went into decline as these industries moved south. The mills closed in 1970. The Whitaker family photographs (Accession 1982.253) collection consists of photographs related to the life of William Whitaker. They document life, landscapes, and the built environments of southeastern Pennsylvania’s rural manufacturing villages from around 1860 to 1913. They also include images of the friends, family, travel, and property of the Whitaker family. Exterior and interior photographs of the Whitaker’s mansion are featured, as are exterior views of Cedar Grove Mills.

William Rau (1855-1920) was a Philadelphia-​based photographer, and a significant figure in the world of American photography in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was well known for his series of stereo cards of scenic views from around the world, as a sought-after portrait photographer for Philadelphia's elites, and as an official photographer for the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, and the Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland. In 1895, the Lehigh Valley Railroad hired Rau as the company's official photographer to document scenic views along the railroad's route. To complete this mission, Rau traveled by rail from New York City to the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania and upstate New York in a customized passenger car equipped with a darkroom and other essential equipment. Over two hundred images from this appointment would later be placed in Lehigh Valley Railroad terminals and public sites along the railroad’s reach. This collection consists of lantern slides. While many of the lantern slides in this collection are undated and only partially identified, most can be definitively identified as originating from this 1895 appointment.

William Pahlmann (1900-1987) was one of the leading American interior designers of the mid-twentieth century. Pahlmann was known for an "eclectic" style that combined materials and decorative elements from many time periods and cultures, everything from antiques to modern laminates, and for bold color and texture combinations. Pahlmann also played a major role in organizing and elevating the status of interior design as a profession. The William Pahlmann papers (Accession 2388) collection are perhaps the most comprehensive archive of an interior design practice of their period. While there are many materials from Pahlmann's earlier years and personal activities, the bulk of the records are from the office of William Pahlmann Associates during the three decades of its existence, 1946-1976. This collection has not been digitized in its entirety. The materials selected here are primarily a selection of interior design drawings and photographs.

The Women at work World War II posters (Accession 1994.236) collection is an artificial collection containing four World War II posters related to women in the workforce. As men went off to fight in World War II, women on the Home Front worked in war industries and volunteered for war-related organizations. Women excelled at the historically male-dominated trades such as welding, riveting, and engine repair. Their contribution was essential for the production and supply of wartime goods. By 1945, over 2 million women were working in the war industries, building ships, aircraft, vehicles, and weaponry. Women also worked in factories and munitions plants, and on farms. They also drove trucks, provided logistic support for soldiers, and entered what were previously male only professional areas.

This digital collection contains a selection of items from the Hagley Library documenting 19th century American women's participation in household handicrafts. It was commonly expected that these women would take up such crafts as part of their domestic duties, particularly needlework, a skill set most of them would begin training in as young girls. Some contemporary feminist critics considered this work to be a frivolous use of women's time and a waste of their intellectual capacity. In Mary Wollstonecraft's <em>A Vindication of the Rights of Woman</em>, the author argued that needlework limited the potential of young girls by stifling their minds and instilling an obsession with ornament over matters of import. For other women, however, such work provided rare opportunities. Household handiwork could offer outlets for artistic self-expression, a chance to socialize outside the home, and a way to commemorate valued emotional bonds. Viewers of the patterns created by the women of the Du Pont family will note a number of designs devoted to family names and monograms. Women's handiwork also offered economic opportunity through the creation of personal property with real monetary value. Additionally, it opened spaces for entrepreneurial women. Many of the items shown here bear the names of women who leveraged gendered expectations about household handicrafts into occupations as pattern designers, authors, and shop owners.

The Woodlawn Trustees, Incorporated, is a non-profit real estate development firm incorporated in Delaware on December 12, 1918, by textile manufacturer William Poole Bancroft (1835-1928). It subsumed Bancroft's earlier, for-profit venture, The Woodlawn Company which operated from 1901 to 1926. The Trustees are responsible for maintaining affordable housing in the city of Wilmington and for the orderly development of large tracts of suburban land. This digital collection offers selections from the Woodlawn Trustees, Incorporated photographs (Accession 2010.276) and Woodlawn Trustees, Inc. records (Accession 2424) collections. These collections have not been digitized in their entirety. These collections document Woodlawn Trustees properties throughout Wilmington and Brandywine Hundred, including low-income city housing, preserved farmland, greenways along the Brandywine Creek, and commercial properties on Concord Pike and the Wilmington waterfront.

This digital collection consists of a selection of World War I textual propaganda posters from Hagley's Published Collections Department. Many of the posters presented here were created by the United States Department of Labor under the direction of Secretary of Labor William Bauchop Wilson (1862-1934). Others were issued by the National Industrial Conservation Movement or DuPont. Largely addressed to American workers, the posters encourage continued production in support of the war effort. The York Oil Burner Company was a manufacturer of oil-fired residential and commercial oil heating equipment. York Oil Burner Co. was founded in 1922 by Edwin Kraber (1895-1962) and Bob Hoffman (1898-1985). The partners manufactured, sold and serviced heating products. Thomas Shipley, Inc. purchased the York Oil Burner Company in 1938, buying out Hoffman and Kraber. The York Oil Burner Company continued to operate as a subsidiary of Thomas Shipley, Inc. until 1943 when the name was changed to York-Shipley, Inc, which manufactured, installed, fueled and serviced oil furnaces and boilers. Today, the business operates as York-Shipley Global, a division of AESYS Technologies. The York Oil Burner Company's industrial oil burning equipment album (Accession 1969.083) consists of one album containing 80 black & white photographic prints of industrial equipment of the York Oil Burner Co., Inc. Many of the photographs are interior views of building basements showing York Oil Burner Co. equipment installed in the building's furnace system.

For over sixty years, Zachary Taylor Vinson (1933-2009) amassed a large and comprehensive collection of printed material documenting on the history transportation, particularly automobiles. The Z. Taylor Vinson collection of transportation ephemera (Accession 2010.0108.ZTV) primarily consists of materials on automobile history but also documents other forms of transportation. It includes trade catalogs, books, magazines, and artifacts in addition to manuscripts relating to Vinson's career at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
